Celebrity status among two friends often leads to a rivalry that people seldom overcome. When one friend becomes famous, leaving the other behind, jealousy is the least of their problems. Just look at Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter. Their frenemy situation didn’t always help the Yankees. But if there’s one famous pro baseballer that A-Rod gets along with just fine is David Ortiz.
The two seasoned MLB players played together in the Mariners’ minor league, but fame found Rodriguez first. Ortiz went on to establish a Hall of Fame career later on, but interestingly, these two had their own frenemy status. Big Papi really blossomed with the Boston Red Sox, while A-Rod was then with the Yankees. At a time when the two teams’ rivalry reached its zenith, these two managed to retain a friendship that is still well and alive today. In fact, the two are coworkers once again, this time on FOX Sports.

Having roots in the Dominican Republic, both stars showed up to support their country against Puerto Rico yesterday. Unfortunately, Dominicana lost in a manner that upset many, despite their incredibly strong roster. But A-Rod and Ortiz seemed to be having a good time, at least.
The former Yankee posted updates from the two friends’ time at the game, one of which included Rodriguez messing with Ortiz’s jewelry.

The former Red Sox legend was wearing a gold neckpiece with a huge pendant dangling at the end, which said Mr. 500 in the middle. The pair were surrounded by other people and they laughed and joked around, all the while speaking in their native tongue – Spanish. Rodriguez captioned the reel with a single emoji – the Dominican Republic flag. The two buddies, not to mention coworkers, definitely seemed to enjoy their time together!

The history behind the ‘500’ necklace Ortiz was sporting
The golden bling wasn’t just a random piece of jewelry that Big Papi was wearing. In fact, it has a rather interesting history. Ortiz currently ranks 17th when it comes to players with the most career home runs. But when he was retiring, Big Papi was at number 6 with 541 homers. It was an iconic day when he hit 500 and as the next season approached, the Red Sox took advantage of that.
They distributed necklaces with ‘500’ on them before a game at Fenway Park against the Orioles. And Ortiz ended up hitting his 506th homer that day, right in the first inning!
