Bregman or Arenado: Who will land first?

The Red Sox have always been in contention for Alex Bregman since he rejected the Astros’ offer. Equation with Arenado burst out in the scene later when he showed his interest in getting traded from the Cardinals. The recent reports suggest that although the Red Sox is preferring Arenado now over Bregman, they are still waiting to check the response from Bregman before proceeding. For Reference, Bregman’s agent Scott Boras is asking north of $200 million for six years while Arenado can be traded from the Cardinals for $21 million for one year. Financially it is Arenado who makes more sense of the Red Sox.

Both Arenado and Bregman are stipulated for 3B while the Red Sox got their 3B with Rafael Devers and they are offering 2B. While it is reported that Bregman gave the nod to play at 2B, the response from Arenado is awaited. “Yes Bregman’s situation does affect Nolan Arenado and I believe I expect that Bregman will need to be resolved first in one way or another before Arenado can be resolved,” said MLB insider Ken Rosenthal in an interview with Foul Territory. It is very unlikely that the Red Sox will proceed with Arenado before Bregman considering how much their GM Alex Cora is lobbying behind Bregman.

Tough competition ahead

Nolan Arenado ended 2024 with 16 HRs and 71 RBIs while Alex Bregman is coming with 26 HRs and 75 RBIs posing similar performance value for the contending teams. However, with the off-season about to end and the spring season knocking at the door, the contention for Arenado is growing more stiff over Bregman. The asking price of Bregman is what keeps the suitors away from him. Moreover, the Astros GM Dana Brown recently confessed about moving away from Bregman leaving the Red Sox and Cubs as contenders. This also offers scope for the Red Sox to play curveball with Scott Boras.

For Arenado, his price of $21 million for one year seems more logical for the suitors and his performance his year can be evaluated before offering a bigger paycheck post 2025. In this case, the question will be about which prospects the Red Sox will offer to trade Arenado. Hence, roadblocks are evident for both Arenado and Bregman but the Red Sox will try to land Bregman from free agency before going behind Arenado. Till then, Arenado’s future will all depend on what Bregman is deciding. Irrespective of Bregman or Arenado, the fans would like to see a rapid decision without any further delay.

It seems like Alex Bregman would keep the suitors on their toes a few more days and Arenado will likely get traded to any other team by then.
