Alex Bregman’s free agency took an unimaginable turn. Amidst a near-lock massive deal is now standing in limbo. The Houston Astros might have moved on, unwilling to meet Scott Boras’ sky-high demands. However, the stalling Bregman market might lead them to a reunion with the Astros. This longer unsigned period is probably indicating at Boras overplaying his hand.

This is not something isolated though. The Pete Alonso saga with the New York Mets has turned ugly, with Steve Cohen publicly highlighting frustration. Boras, as usual, is not backing down, calling teams unreasonable while holding out for larger deals. But in Bregman’s instance, the waiting game is proving costly. With teams unwilling to meet his price, his best option could be returning to Houston on their terms.

Scott Boras’ massive deal-cracking strategies could be backfiring. The Astros initially offered a six-year, $156 million deal. However, Boras expected a larger one, saying no to that. And now, months later, no team has stepped up. The Red Sox and Cubs are only going as high as four years. Detroit has also not shown any serious interest in Scott Boras’ asking price. Even the Blue Jays have also pulled back. So, Houston, once thought out of the picture, is back after freeing up payroll by trading Ryan Pressly to the Cubs. Even Jose Altuve has offered to learn left field to help bring Bregman back. Well, Houston might be open to a reunion.

With each passing day, Bregman’s market shrinks. Even with a .260/.315/.453 slash line with 26 homers and 75 RBIs, if Breggy enters spring training unsigned, he might miss vital reps. For a player who is notorious for starting slow, this is a really big gamble,” The Astros Locker noted. But Scott Boras’ approaches are frustrating teams. Think of Polar Bear – Steve Cohen has already voiced his displeasure, Soto was tough, but, this is worse.” So, if Boras does not adjust, Bregman could be watching teams move on while his 2025 season slips away. The same situation as Alonso…

Boras’ history of intricate deals and fans’ frustration

Alex Bregman is not the first player stuck in free agency under Scott Boras. He has a history of pushing negotiations to the limit, sometimes winning big, sometimes, miscalculating. For instance, Bryce Harper landed a 13-year, $330 million deal, However, his free agency dragged on. JD Martinez had to wait until late February 2018 before settling for five years and $110 million, far less than expected. Others were not as lucky. Mike Moustakas rejected a qualifying offer but had to settle for a one-year, $6.5 million deal. Dallas Keuchel remained unsigned for months before taking a short-term contract.

Now, Bregman faces the same risk. If no team steps up, he could be forced into a much lower deal. Fans aren’t happy. They blame Boras for pricing Bregman out of a Houston return.

If 6 years and $156M is still on the table, Bregman better jump at the chance,” one fan said. Another pointed out that spring training is near and his market is quickly drying up.” Some analysts think that the Astros will definitely sign Bregman. Ken Rosenthal said, I would bet the Astros in this negotiation.” Like, Ken, some fans are still hoping for a last-minute deal. But the longer this drags on, the worse it looks for both Bregman and Boras. Because the team has already signed Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker. So, Bregman’s return to the Astros is not looking all bright.

Bregman’s gamble kinda backfired, and his best move now is to re-sign with Houston before his market collapses further. Accepting a reasonable deal now ensures stability and avoids further damage to his value.
