Alex Bregman’s future with the Houston Astros is uncertain. The team reportedly offered a six-year, $156 million deal; however, they have shown no willingness to enhance this offer. The issue? Bregman is not interested in taking a pay cut. The 30-year-old third baseman has earned $28.5 million annually over the past two seasons and expects to maintain, if not exceed that figure. With Houston standing firm and other teams showing interest, Bregman finds himself at a crossroads.

The Astros have not officially put their offer back on the table, signaling that his time in Houston may be nearing its end. If a deal were going to happen, it likely would have been completed by now. Houston’s front office is not identified for overpaying aging stars, and Bregman’s negotiations are proving no distinctive. The team’s offer was clear, but sources say the team has made little effort to push discussions forward. They appear content moving on if Bregman does not agree.

Bregman is a vital player; however, Houston is not desperate. “Take it or leave it” is what Houston is offering A-Breg as explained by Patrick Creighton. The team has seen such a situation before with Correa. So, if the price is not right, they will walk away. On the contrary, Alex Bregman has made his stance just as clear: he thinks his value remains high and is not willing to accept a lower annual salary.

In addition, Scott Boras said that Bregman will not settle for a low contract offer at the period of his free agency. This deadlock has left Astros fans frustrated. Some believe the team is making a mistake by not pushing harder to keep one of their biggest stars, while others argue that Bregman’s demands are unreasonable. One fan tweeted, “Love Bregman, but if he really wanted to stay, he would not be playing hardball over a couple million.” So, will the 3B remain unsigned?

With Houston looking like a long shot, other teams are making their move. On the basis of Patrick Creighton, the Tigers and Blue Jays have six-year offers on the table. However, Toronto could be off the list, as Bregman reportedly has little interest in playing there. In addition, the Cubs are in the mix, however, preferring a shorter deal, while the Red Sox are capping their offer at four years. In addition, Jon Heyman currently reported that an unnamed team has provided a lucrative six-year offer with an opt-out after the first year.

Such an approach could be appealing to Bregman, enabling him to test free agency again if he performs effectively. Reports highlight that the Yankees have checked in on Bregman’s situation, however, are not considered serious contenders unless his asking price drops. The Dodgers, another team often linked to marquee free agents, have not highlighted interest, likely because of its infield depth.

The question now is whether any of such teams will fulfill Alex Bregman’s asking price. He needs at least $28.5 million per season, but that is proving to be a tough sell.  Bregman is a great player, but teams aren’t lining up to overpay. Multiple star players, including Cody Bellinger and Blake Snell, entered free agency expecting massive deals. Instead, they settled for far less than their initial asking prices.
