It has not been the best year for the New York Mets. With a series of disappointing plays, despite having the largest MLB payroll by a considerable margin, fans have come to expect dissatisfaction. Although the latest Subway Series against the Yankees went alright, the last match-up with the Boston Red Sox did not go as expected. For BoSox’s Justin Turner, however, the night brought an iconic move.

Turner has had a rollercoaster year after suffering a freak head injury during spring training in 2023. However, the slugger made a quick comeback and is making bold plays. He compared a recent dive to the swimming legend Michael Phelps.

Some athletes’ names are well-known to even those individuals who know nothing about sports – Usain Bolt, Simone Biles, and Michael Jordan among them. But there’s another Michael whose name is known globally for the sheer number of records he has set, legendary swimmer Michael Phelps. His perfect dives into the cool blue of swimming pools are soothing to watch, but they’re not necessarily similar to baseball.

In their desperate attempts to make it to bases before the ball comes to tag them, sluggers abandon their bodies to gravity just to touch that white block of hard rubber. The Red Sox’s Turner did the same during the series finale against the Mets when he sprinted for third after Rafael Devers’ single.

As most such plays are, it was a tense moment to see who won. But the Red Sox player shared a slow-motion video of the play and hilariously captioned it, Who did it better? Me or @m_phelps00 ??? ?” He was, of course, called safe against Mets second baseman Danny Mendick, who looked shocked. For once, fans had a few positive comments for the umpire, although most wanted Turner back in his old uniform.

After eight years in Los Angeles, Turner moved on to the Boston Red Sox at the beginning of the 2023 season. And Dodgers fans clearly miss him, because most comments on Turner’s post called him back to the Boys in Blue.

“Frankly we?re just mad you?re not on the dodgers. Can the dodgers trade for you for a playoff run?”

“Wish he was still in Dodger blue!!!?”

“Dodger moves in a Red Sox uniform ?”

One praised the umpire’s call, who have been coming under more and more fire this year. “Good call by the umpire”
