The San Francisco Giants have been at the top of their trade and drafting decisions game this offseason. After placing fourth in the National League West and finishing this season on a neutral note, the club is looking for major change. Much of their team’s bad form can be justified by their inability to sign star players in the past. But will they finally break away from the unfortunate trend this winter?

The Giants have had an illustrious lineup in the past with legends like Willie Mays and Barry Bonds honoring the team’s dugout. But all that is history. Now, with lessons from the past and a bright future to look forward to, will the Giants make considerable changes in their lineup? Like, say, adding Juan Soto to their roster?

Juan Soto is rumored to be traded this offseason. However, his agent Scott Boras shut down any such speculations, saying that the player will remain a Padres member until 2024. But with the Padres reportedly making budget cuts before next season, it does not seem feasible for them to hold on to Soto any longer than this year.

Juan Soto’s salary of $33 million falls nowhere in the box of the Padres’ goal of making financial cuts next year. They already have a $50 million loan hanging over their heads and a lost TV deal losing them more money. The team might be open to a trade option for Soto in lieu of prospects and some cash favors.

Cue the Giants, who could use a good trade right at this moment. And they have ideal prospects to give back as well. According to a Baseball America report, the Giants have starting pitcher Kyle Harrison and OF Luis Matos as excellent trade options.

How promising does the prospective trade look?

Kyle Harrison struck out 35 this season across 34.2 innings pitched. Luis Matos racked up a good 2 homers and 15 RBIs with a .250 BA in 57 hits in 76 games played. Juan Soto’s 35 homers and 109 RBIs across 162 games this season speak for themselves. Comparing them all, it seems like a fair deal, especially with Harrison’s and Matos’s signing bonuses of $2.5 million and $725K. It might help if the Padres receive some cash favors along with it.

The Giants have innumerable other prospects to trade for Soto. Keaton Winn, Mason Black, Hayden Birdsong, Carson Seymour, Carson Whisenhunt…the list goes on. Regardless of how their current lineup looks, their list of prospects is full of possibilities.
