Baseball season is at an end, with the postseason in full swing. As usual, Shohei Ohtani is not playing, despite his almost otherworldly two-way talent. After three spectacular seasons on both sides of the ball, another elbow injury ended things early in 2023. Missing almost all of September due to a UCL tear and right oblique tightness, Shotime sat out of the Los Angeles Angels’ last stretch. But the trouble started in August, possibly due to Drake.
The 5x Grammy winner may be a top artist when it comes to music, but no fan wants to see his sports allegiances. Although Canadian, Aubrey Drake Graham is an avid lover of American sports and can often be found at NBA games. The God’s Plan singer also supports various MLB and NFL entities, but unfortunately, his support always ends in utter disaster. The next team he seems to be casting a shadow on is Puerto Rico.

On August 5th, 2023, Drake was photographed wearing Shohei Ohtani’s All-Star game jersey. From hand cramps to arm fatigue, things eventually ended with the Japanese sensation out for the season as a pitcher. Fans were furious because it was not the first instance of its kind, and has continued since then. Now, it’s Puerto Rico’s turn.
The 2023 World Baseball Classic saw the country reach the quarter-finals, where they lost to Mexico. It was, nevertheless. a great run for the team, which has been consistently good over the years. Finishing as the runner-up twice and with one third-place finish, it is likely they will again make a case for themselves in 2026. If Japan doesn’t dominate yet again, that is. Or the Drake Curse doesn’t come true.
The rapper was recently spotted wearing the Puerto Rican WBC shirt with a huge grin on his face, showing off the jersey to the camera.

While he may be happy, a public display of sports affiliation has never ended well for any of the teams or individuals Drake supports. 2026 is still a while away, so perhaps the effects of the curse may wear off by then. Only time will tell.

As if one musical artist’s bad influence wasn’t enough, there is another one. Daddy Yankee, who is incidentally Puerto Rican, also gained the reputation of a bad luck charm earlier this year. During the 2023 World Baseball Classic, he appeared with different countries’ flags in support – Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and Mexico. Guess what happened to each team?
