The New York Yankees had an otherwise disappointing season this year. However, the same wasn’t held true for their star pitcher Gerrit Cole. For the first time in his decade-long career, New York Yankees’ ace has been recognized for his contribution to the pitch with a Cy Young award win. As anticipation builds for the next chapter in this baseball saga, speculation swirls about the potential conclusion of Cole’s journey with the iconic New York franchise after 2024.

Amidst the buzzing winter meetings and Cole’s evident recourse regarding the impending opt-out clause, one question comes to mind. Will 2024 be the final season on the team for one of the best pitchers the MLB has seen to date?

MLB insider Bryan Hoch recently shared a post on Twitter (now X) that reflected on the very question all Yankees fans have been asking since Cole’s recent win. According to Hoch, Cole’s agent, Scott Boras, is being a bit of a riddler when it comes to enforcing his Yankees’ future. Boras said the Yankees “would anticipate that those things are going to happen. It’s not anything we’ve talked at length about, other than his continuing to perform well.”

This was regarding the Yankees’ option to revert Cole’s probable decision to opt out of his current 9 years, $324 million contract with them. Gerrit Cole is set to be a Yankee for five more years, starting 2024. Although, after the disappointing season they faced this year, it will not be much of a surprise to see Cole seeking another home for his skills and for good reasons.

The Bronx Bombers have been displaying a streak of over-dependence on most of their star players throughout the previous seasons. Take captain Aaron Judge’s July injury stint, for instance. They were heavily stressing his form, as a result of a disproportionate roster – which led to the right fielder taking a long break from the diamond. Are the Yankees on the same pathway with Cole’s performance as well?

Cole in Pickle or Cole to Core Four?

Baseball analyst Wayne G. McDonnell Jr. of Forbes fame tends to think that the Yanks have been wasting away Cole’s range of talent in his prime years. All of his gifts—his wits, his ability to read the pitch, his resilience, and his skills—are supposed to act as the foundation on which the Yanks could have built themselves a winning team.

Sadly, more often than not, the ace is often left with “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” reputation. Or at least that is what McDonnell believes to be a consistent display of a decline in value in the New York Yankees brand. It was disappointing, to say the least, given that the last time the Yanks won a Cy Young, their team was having one of the best years of their lives.

Cole became the sixth Yankee to clinch the award for the best pitcher this year. Before that, legends like Roger Clemens (2001) and Ron Guidry (1978) brought this honor home for the Bronx Bombers. Cole enrooted his name as the only other Yankee (after Guidry) to have won the award with unanimous votes.
