The Cubs are the top contender now for Alex Bregman and with teams like the Red Sox and Astros contending for long, they came out of nowhere and all set to make the last laugh! Bregman was long expected that he would join either of the Red Sox or Astros and the Cubs were nowhere in the scene. However, with the initial two teams seeming to be moving away from Bregman, it’s all the Cubs’ show now.
The Bregman saga has been going on for a long now and neither of the two contending teams was able to match the expectations of Bregman that led to the delay. Bregman’s expectation for $200 million is something the teams are skeptical to offer. So are the Cubs offering north of $200 million to Bregman? If not, how are they all set to land him?

The Cubs are all set for Bregman
The Subs reportedly offered approximately $30 million per year for a four-year deal with opt-outs. This roughly translates to $120 million for four years, lower than a $156 million offer from the Astros. However, the AAV coming for the Astros is $26 million, lower than what the Cubs are offering. With the opt-outs, Bregman can have the flexibility to hit the free agency at his will. It is also reported that the Cubs offered both four-year and six-year deals with the same AAV. The deal got sweeter for Bregman because his staple 3B position was offered to him by the Cubs. The offer by the Cubs is the right deal placed at the right time considering the contenders are less now for Bregman and he will have lower bargaining power to deal with the Cubs.
“They have gotten Tucker. They have gotten Pressly two guys who are teammates of Bregman”, said MLB insider Jon Heyman in his interview with Bleacher Report. This point indicates that with Bregman’s two ex-teammates playing in the Cubs, they would be leveraged in landing Breggy on the team. The dual advantages of having his ex-teammates in the team and offering a four/six-year deal are what makes the Cubs all ahead in the contention. However, there are negative factors like the unfriendly batting conditions at Wrigley Field, the home ground of the Cubs. A few insiders warned Bregman about joining the Cubs considering he would face difficulties to up his numbers with tall fence height and crosswinds.
Jon Heyman believes at this moment the Cubs have the best shot at landing Alex Bregman.

All done for the Astros?
The Astros seem to be done with Alex Bregman, considering he has yet to confirm the $156 million offer. In a recent fanfest, the Astros GM Dana Brown said, “We’re continuing to have internal conversations because he’s still available”, pointing out how they are no longer actively involved with his agent Scott Boras. Brown was all clear about not being willing to offer more than $156 million, and it is up to Bregman if he accepts the offer or not. Hence, no official connection is highly unlikely now between Bregman and the Astros.
The Red Sox was another team contending for him, but they are unlikely to offer higher of the Astros to Bregman, nor they are offering 3B to him. Hence, it can be concluded that both the Astros and Red Sox are somewhat out of contention, except if they come out with a bigger deal. Although the $156 million offer is still on from the Astros’ end, in this case, Bregman can either go for the Cubs or settle with the Astros. Spring season is around the corner, and time is ticking for Bregman.
Alex Bregman can be a good value addition for any team he joins, and for the Cubs, nothing can be better than getting the trio of Bregman, Pressly, and Tucker at the work. The fans are all set to witness the reunion.
