So are the youth-loaded Yankees enough strong to challenge teams like the Dodgers this year? Youth brigade with Anthony Volpe and Jasson Dominguez
How do the Yankees in 2025 differ from Steinbrenner’s traditional era? While Steinbrenner was all about going big, getting the biggest names, and representing the entire MLB, the new-age Yankees are just the opposite. They now play the third fiddle among the big three behind the Dodgers and Mets (who propel forward with Juan Soto) and are yet to go aggressive for the hottest free agents. Rather, their skipper Aaron Judge pins his hopes on rookies like Dominguez and Volpe.
Well, their new-age strategy would have been deemed successful with their on-field action. While the last year was not on par, all eyes are on 2025 about how the youth brigade of the Yankees perform. So what’s special about Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe? Aaron Judge gives his flowers.
“Jasson Dominguez has another full year… and see what he can do, you know, at the top middle of our order. He’s another guy that can just change the game with his legs, his bat, you know, kind of everything.” Aaron Judge said, “Then even … know Anthony Volpe. We saw him do his thing.”
So what’s special about Dominguez? Well, Domínguez made a splash in his MLB debut, hitting a home run and becoming the youngest Yankee to homer in their debut. Just 21, Dominguez made 6 home runs in two years with a batting average of .179. Everyone would say he’s talented. Moreover, his switch-hitting ability to play at both ends of the plate makes him a valuable asset for the Yankees.
On the other hand, Volpe is the first Yankees shortstop to have played in all 160 games last year hitting 12 homers and 60 RBIs. He’s a polished athlete and pretty vocal on the pitch. He could become an asset for the Yankees with solid defensive skills, too. That’s enough numbers for Aaron Judge to pin hopes on them.

Is relying on rookies like Dominguez and Volpe a genius move or a risky gamble for the Yankees?

The new lean and mean Yankees
How will the lean and mean Yankees of 2025 perform? As per the projected lineup for this year, Jasson Dominguez is set to lead from leftfield while Volpe will lead as shortstop. Players like Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and DJ LeMahieu are the veterans while the rest of the hopes are set on the youngsters.
While losing Juan Soto was tough, it could be a blessing in disguise for the Yankees. They were able to plug the gaps by getting a few more prospects which they otherwise wouldn’t have if they stayed with Soto. Replacing one world-class player with some young talents remains a smart approach to reignite the team.
