New York Yankees captain, Aaron Judge slid into second base on Sunday. This move done against the Milwaukee Brewers wasn’t just any other takeout slide. Let’s just say, baseball Twitter had a field day with it. The move, which initially went uncalled by the umpires but was later confirmed to be a missed interference call, has become a hot debate. Now Judge is at the center of it all. So was it really a missed call?

Well, during a ground ball in the sixth inning, Judge, aimed to break up a double play. In order to achieve that, he slid into second with his left arm raised, deflecting the throw from Brewers shortstop Willy Adames. This play resulted in a safe call for Alex Verdugo at first base. Milwaukee’s manager Pat Murphy was visibly disappointed by this Murphy and he argued for interference. However, the umpires initially disagreed. Here’s the twist, upon review, the crew chief acknowledged it as a missed one.

While Andy Fletcher might have called it a fumbled call, Judge remains stern that his slide technique is nothing new. He even shared in a post game interview, “You can look back at any picture you want of me sliding into second base. That’s always happened.”  With that, the Yankees’ star slugger maintains his raised left arm is simply part of his usual slide.

The controversial statement by Fletcher and Judges strong stance on his usual slide has brought about a flurry of opinions on Twitter. Scrutiny of past slides reveals mixed results.  Some fans side with Judge, unearthing photos showcasing a similar slide technique throughout his career. Others, however, remain unconvinced, arguing that Brewers’ situation was a deliberate attempt to block the throw.

Now here comes another layer of complexity. The controversial slide wasn’t eligible for replay review according to MLB rules. This means the on-field decision, although later deemed incorrect, stood unchanged. On one hand, the debate rages on online. On the other, the Yankees moved on from the moment eventually winning the game 15-5 and taking the series against the Brewers.
