It’s a time when the Big Apple buzzes with the electrifying performances of two sporting titans. Aaron Judge, the Yankees’ colossal captain, continues to dominate baseball with his powerful bat. Meanwhile, Jalen Brunson is also making magic on the hardwood, as he leads a Knicks resurgence. Fans often wonder whether these heroes follow each other’s quests. Well, can’t say for the latter, but the former is certainly inspired. Recently, the Yankees captain opened up about his feelings and admiration for the Knicks’ playoff run and their dynamic leader, giving everyone a unique New York sports moment.

The stage for these remarks was Saturday, May 10. The night that ended in grave 11-7 disappointment for the Bronx Bombers, despite Judge recording his 13th and 14th home runs of this season. Interestingly, the same night, on the other side of the city, the Knicks hosted the Boston Celtics for Game 3 of their playoff series. Of everyone involved, Judge felt the scheduling conflict with the NBA game most keenly.

While addressing the media prior to Saturday’s showdown, Judge confessed: “It’s been tough to catch a game.” As with the majority of Knicks playoff games, apart from their first-round clashes in Detroit, it coincides with the Yankees’ games. And like many fans, the slugger often relies on recaps. “But I’ve been seeing the highlights, seeing what they’re doing,” he added. Even without seeing the game live, Judge is clearly impressed by the Knicks’ tenacity, especially against a strong team.

“It’s impressive, especially going up against Boston. They just won it, the former champs,” Judge remarked, acknowledging the Celtics’ pedigree. “And for [the Knicks] to have a two-game lead, it’s pretty impressive. They’ve been up. They’ve been down big. Come back with some great clutch plays at the end on the offensive side and defensive side. I wish we could catch a game.”

Shifting his focus to the Knicks’ floor general, Judge offered high praise for Brunson. The two New York sports heroes met last year when Brunson threw the ceremonial first pitch at a Yankees game. In fact, they were spotted deep in conversation on the field for several minutes, and to say the least, Brunson left an impression. While talking about Brunson, Judge saw parallel coolness in his approach, saying, “He was just cool, calm, and collected on the field, which is kind of how he is out there on the basketball court.”

Judge’s admiration for Brunson is unmistakable. He reflected, “[Jalen Brunson] He’s a quiet assassin. He goes out there, does his job.” Well, the Knickerbockers certainly know what Judge is talking about.

Such a verdict carries significant weight coming from Judge, himself a former basketball star in his high school days. He wasn’t just a baseball prospect at Linden High School in Northern California, Judge was similarly dominant on the basketball court. He excelled as an all-state center, averaging an impressive 18.2 points and 12.8 rebounds per game.

And his baseball? The Yankees outfielder’s own performance this past Saturday was nothing less than triumphant. His two home runs against the A’s marked his 41st multi-homer game of his career, placing him among Yankees legends. Through Sunday, May 11, Judge led the majors with a .396 batting average, a .486 on-base percentage, a .772 slugging percentage, 14 homers, and 37 RBIs. Every night, he shows why he’s one of the most feared sluggers in baseball.

Meanwhile, across town, Brunson has been writing his own epic. The Villanova product changed the Knicks after he arrived from the Dallas Mavericks in 2022. For his remarkable performances, he was named the 2025 NBA Clutch Player of the Year. Even before the Knicks lost Game 3 to the Celtics, Brunson still managed 27 points and averaged a remarkable 29.4 points and 7.6 assists in the playoffs, showcasing his ability to carry the team in high-pressure situations.
