Friend, teammate and Captain Aaron Judge was all smiles as he witnessed the Newport Beach-born add his first Cy Young award to the prospective Hall of Fame resume. While there has been absolutely no doubt that this award was long due, and when it did come, it came with joy and pride. “G, congrats buddy! Congrats on your first of many Cy Youngs. It’s an honor to share the field with you, watch you work behind the scenes, your prep for every game, how you work with your teammates man, its a treat!
Judge was generously honored to play with him the past couple of years. He expressed how excitedly he looked forward to more years with the 6x All Star. Further, he went on to congratulate Cole and his family on the special award. These words only prove how deserving Cole Train has been of this award.
As the award rolled in, the NYY leadership called Cole, the “pitcher’s pitcher”. In their statement, Brian Cashman also revealed his quality that stands out, “He was simply dominant this year and took the ball every time it was his turn.” He added that Cole is dedicated to being the best version of himself he can be, which makes him stand out.

Manager Aaron Boone also shared, “This is a richly deserved award for Gerrit, and I couldn’t be happier for him“. The skipper acknowledged that he was fortunate to manage this generational talent. Along with that, he also highlighted Cole’s dedication for his craft and, to the game and to his team.
Cole’s Historic Win, Joining Elite Company
Cole became the sixth Yankee in franchise history and the first Yankee since Roger Clemens in 2001 to win the Cy Young award. Right-hander Sonny Gray of the Minnesota Twins came in second with 20 votes, followed by Toronto Blue Jays’ Kevin Gausman in third. Cole led the league in innings pitched, going 15-4 with an AL-low 2.63 ERA and 222 strikeouts in 209 innings.

Despite having three excellent seasons in the Bronx, Cole elevated his play this year. He felt as at ease and settled in his pinstripes as he had ever been heading into spring training. And his performance reflected that. Manager Boone frequently mentioned throughout the season that Cole was able to limit damage when he did get into trouble by handling situations better than he had in the past.
