The New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge is facing the wrath of the Yankees faithful. As he struggled through a slow start to the season, Judge was victim to a chorus of boos after striking out four times in a recent home loss. But being the captain that he is, he shared a response that one didn’t quite expect.
This season has been a difficult one for him so far. Through 21 games, Judge’s batting average finds itself at a lowly .179 – a far cry from his often seen power hitting. Granted that strikeouts are a part of his game, but 27 Ks in 78 at-bats pose a cause for concern. However, instead of melting under pressure, Judge displayed great composure.

When asked about the boos, he said, “I’ve heard worse. And I’d probably do the same thing in their situation. Oh, I’ve heard worse, and I’d probably be doing the same thing in their situation. It’s still early, it’s a long season, but you know, I’m just missing the pitch. If I get a pitch in the zone, I gotta capitalize on it, ’cause I don’t get too many. I guess it’s what it comes down to it: Don’t miss your pitch when you get it and take your walks when you can”.

It is this kind of mature reaction that highlights Judge’s leadership qualities. He shared that he understands the frustration of the fans, who are accustomed to seeing him dominate at the plate.
On one hand, the boos may sting. On the other hand, it’s important to remember that Judge is not a stranger to success. Apart from the fact that he’s a five-time All-Star and the reigning home run king, he has smashed a record-breaking 62 dingers in 2022.

So what’s the good news for the Yankees fans? Albeit Judge’s struggles, the team itself is thriving. The team currently sits at the top the AL East with a 14-7 record. Clearly, the Yanks are showing championship potential. Not to mention, the addition of slugger Juan Soto has provided a spark, establishing MVP-caliber play.
The 31-year-old captain’s slump is certainly a concern. Particular considering his recent injury history. But the it’s still early in the season. With a talented roster and a supportive leader in Judge, it’s only a matter of time that Judge turns around his play. The Yankees fans might have to temporarily be patient, but Judge is capable of silencing the boos.
