Aaron Judge is taking iconic jersey numbers to a new level. The New York Yankees are on the road in Pittsburgh after a satisfying series against the Boston Red Sox. The first game against the Pirates ended in an unexpected 7-5 win for New York, who are surprisingly once again back in Wild Card contention. But the star of the show was still the Yankees captain.
Recently nominated for the Roberto Clemente Award, the league is honoring Judge for his work with the All-Rise Foundation. Incidentally, September 15 was also Roberto Clemente Day, the player who revolutionized the meaning of philanthropy in MLB. While celebrating the Pirates legend in his own way, the Yankees slugger went a little wild with numbers.

Aaron Judge raised the Bronx’s curiosity when he decided to wear number ’99’ as a major leaguer. Traditionally, high numbers are given to minor leaguers who have low chances of ever making it big. But the Yankees outfielder has become synonymous with his jersey number, which he shed yesterday.

For Sept. 15th’s occasion, Judge decided to wear a ’21’ jersey to honor Clemente, as well as custom black and yellow Air Jordan cleats. But as Talkin’ Yanks pointed out, those weren’t the only digits on his gray uniform. Judge’s arm brace had his usual ’99’ on the side and the enigma of the ’66’ belt continued.
The belt puzzle first made itself known in April 2023, when expectations for the Bronx Bombers were still high and their captain wasn’t facing a debilitating injury. Judge was fresh off of an AL MVP award for hitting 62 home runs and at the start of the regular season, his belt read ’66’. Was it the number of homers he planned to smash this year? Or was he simply wearing his belt upside down?
Maybe it was something else entirely. The mystery has not yet been solved and neither has Judge commented on it. But one thing is certain – three different numbers on his jersey earned him quite a few comments from fans.
Yankees Fans Are Wondering the Reason Behind the Look
The Yankees’ grooming policies don’t usually allow much room for players to give an individual flair to their looks. But Aaron Judge always finds a way to work around it. And eagle-eyed fans never miss it.
With this three-numbered move, Yankees Nation has a new title for their captain.

One labeled him “A man of many layers.”

With ’66’ in play, it would be impossible to miss the Star Wars connection. Palpatine’s secret order that was tasked with killing the Jedis used the same number.
It makes me wonder how many star wars references would be made if he was #66. Emperor judge has just executed order 66 and the opposing team is crumbling

One also referenced ‘Higgy’, aka catcher Kyle Higashioka, who wears ’66’ on his back.
he’s been doing the belt thing for a while always thought to myself why is he wearing higgys belt

One referenced the original Pinstriped wearer of ’21’, Paul O’Neill. The jersey number was retired in 2022.
