“Needs the Power of Yoda”: Struggling New York Yankees Star’s Classy Star Wars-Inspired Cleats Fail to Stop Fans From Mocking Him

When The Mandalorian premiered in 2019, it won the heart of most Star Wars fans. The sci-fi franchise has become such an intricate part of American pop culture that people of all ages are devout fans. That includes one New York Yankees player- who uniquely honored his love for the show.

The Mandalorian has garnered much fan attention with the father-son dynamic that the main characters established. Fans cooed over The Child and his mysterious powers, whose name was later revealed to be Grogu. Yoda is already an iconic character in popular lore, and the question of his species has never been satisfactorily answered. Perhaps because of the mystery that surrounds him, fans adore him. And ball player Aaron Hicks is one of them.

With recent seasons, especially the ongoing third one, many think the show has gone off the rails. Lacking a clear direction, The Mandalorian‘s popularity has dimmed in the last few months. Or rather, it has taken an infamous turn, especially with controversy surrounding some of the actors. Nevertheless, OG Star Wars fans are not to be deterred.

Talkin’ Yanks recently shared a picture of Hicks’ cleats, which are dark blue and white with green highlights, resembling the color theme of The Mandalorian. The original photo was shared by Lucia Footwear Co., who designed the custom cleats. Grogu adorns one side of a shoe with Nike’s symbol in the background. The shoe straps say ‘Hicks’in bold letters, while green laces make them pop with color.

The shoes, or any type of merchandise, are a natural progression when one is part of a fandom.

But since Hicks has been struggling with the Yankees since last season, fans had no dearth of responses.

In the 2022 season, there was a time when Hicks had zero hits for 33 at-bats. Needless to say, Bronx fans were incensed. Loyal to a tee, they’ll shower love on a player if they’re worth it. But a continued lack of performance will incur wrath unlike any. The same happened to the center fielder.

Some thought maybe Yoda or Grogu could help him out by using the Force in Hicks’ favor.

Many thought the cleats would go to waste since Hicks might end up on the bench again.

One quipped that the Stormtroopers’ shoes would suit Hicks well, since in Star Wars, the only thing they can boast about is numbers. For the most part, the stormtroopers don’t usually come across as dominant hitters.

Some referenced the ‘galaxy far, far away’ phrase, with which all Star Wars movies begin.

One referenced the Mandalorian creed, ‘This is the way.’

There has been a lot of talk among fans about Hicks being traded to another team, although the Yankees have not yet made any announcements regarding his future.
