Even though Alex Rodriguez and his ex-fiancee Jennifer Lopez failed to buy the New York Mets, their attempt is still an infamous story in the sporting world. Notably, business tycoon Steven Cohen won the Mets’ bid for a whopping $2.4 billion. But even after winning the bid, the $17.5 billion man Cohen did not hesitate to take a dig at the New York Yankees legend.

Notably, Cohen gave an introductory speech about becoming the majority owner of the baseball franchise. In the press conference, the billionaire businessman got asked about the people who came in second and third position while trying to buy the Mets. There, he swiftly took a jab at the “could-be owners” without uttering their names.

Buying the Mets was surely a race between Cohen and A-Rod. Where Cohen was a long-time Mets fan, A-Rod had grown up watching the Mets play. The former baseball player had the view set to change the perspective of people with which they used to watch the game by acquiring the team. Unfortunately for him, he could not compete with Cohen’s $2.4 billion deal and lost. Also, in the second year under Cohen’s reign, the Metropolitans clinched the playoff berth by winning over 100 games in the regular season.

How did the Mets play under Cohen’s reign?

After having made significant changes in 2021, in the first year, the Mets could not qualify for a postseason berth. They ended the season by winning 77 games and losing 85. But the coming year had something else in store for the team. They ended the 2022 regular season with over 100 wins. Which then led them to win a Wild Card berth to enter the postseason. Unfortunately, they couldn’t win and thus ended the season after playing the Wild Card series only.
