Derek Jeter spent two decades on the baseball diamond honing his skills to perfection with each passing season. He mastered the craft of batting, and fielding, throughout those years. Fast-forward to 2004, when he was invited to an interview, where he graced the couch among a few other world-renowned athletes. Among those honorable guests were tennis legend, Serena Williams, and NBA icon, Michael Jordan.?

Derek Jeter became one of the greatest shortstops in baseball, playing for the New York Yankees. Remaining a Yankees loyalist, he became a 14-time All-Star and five-time World Series champion. On the other hand, Serena Williams is a 23-time grand slam champion. In total, Serena won 73 singles tournaments, reaching the top spot in international women’s rankings in 2002.?
Meanwhile, Michael Jordan is a 14-time All-Star, who won six NBA tournament final trophies during his active years. The athletes mostly discussed their journey to success among various topics in the interview. At one point, Serena got asked about her opinion on baseball as a sport in the presence of Jeter, and Jordan. Remarkably, Jordan also has had some first-hand experience in professional baseball.?
Serena Williams about baseball in front of Derek Jeter?
Derek Jeter is the best example of the toil that baseball as a sport can be. He has led the Yankees to numerous improbable victories from hopeless situations. At the same time, he also saw his team slipping to defeats from commanding positions. So, Serena Williams’ comments on baseball rather shocked Derek Jeter, and Michael Jordan.?
Jokingly, Serena also got asked about her thoughts regarding the Miami Marlins. One year earlier to the interview, the Marlins defeated Jeter’s Yankees to lift the World Series in 2003. Therefore, the question was rather a poke at Jeter.?
Expressing her opinion on baseball, Serena said, “I used to think that it was a very easy sport, and I didn’t think you would get really physically involved. Like you know, you just hit the ball. And it seems like the people there would just stand in the center field. Would just stand there and catch. You know, I think gosh, I could do that. You know, I thought it was just really simple. And who couldn’t play baseball?”?

Then, adding the part about her change of opinion, Serena further said, “But you know, it’s really intense. You know, the center fielder is running back and forth every time. You know, I really have learned to appreciate this sport. It is fun to watch. And how about the Marlins!”?
A hilarious co-incidence for Jeter and Jordan?
Interestingly, Jeter became a joint owner of the Marlins in 2017, with Jordan as a minority stakeholder. Jeter also took up the duties of the Marlins’ CEO. However, Jeter resigned in brief time, leaving the role in 2022.?
