Alex Rodriguez Relives Tom Cruise?s ?Risky Business? Alongside Kobe Bryant and Michael Phelps in Major Throwback

Alex Rodriguez, Kobe Bryant, Michael Phelps, and Tony Hawk once came together to do an ad for a video game. Had YouTube been back then what it is today, it would have broken the Internet.

When it comes to iconic advertisements, Michael Jordan’s ‘Be Like Mike’ or ‘The McDonald’s Showdown’ is still fresh in fans’ minds. Or Bo Jackson’s ‘Bo Knows’ ad, where the celebrated athlete struggles with hockey. But in 2008, four athletes came together to promote a game with a Hollywood twist.

Tom Cruise’s?Mission: Impossible and Top Gear franchises, among others, have cemented his status as an action hero. But he too was once a teenager. In 1983,?Risky Business propelled a young Cruise to stardom in Hollywood. But it was the iconic dance scene in a pink shirt, underwear, and socks that fans most remember. And that is exactly what the athletic foursome recreated.

Alex Rodriguez shared a throwback clip to Instagram with the ad, which shows him, then Tony Hawk, then Phelps, and finally Bryant sliding into the living room. Except for Hawk, who is of course on a skateboard, the rest are in their socks. Each of them is wearing a pink shirt but has a variation of white shorts underneath. While Rodriguez and Phelps shred their guitars, Hawk kills it on the drums. And Bryant sings?Old Time Rock and Roll?for Guitar Hero World Tour.

It’s a perfect recreation of the original scene, with the music timed to their slides across the floor. The athletes even fall back on the sofa with their legs up, kicking the air. It ends with an outer view of the house where four shadows can be seen dancing around, where Cruise’s was a single one.

“Unleash your inner rock star. Guitar Hero World Tour,”?the voiceover says. Indeed, it shows the sports stars rocking out like they do it daily!

Sports Fans Love This Collision of Worlds

When the commercial aired, it earned fans’ appreciation from all sports. Even today, the video has the same effect. Rodriguez posted it with the caption,?“What a throwback ? #mambaforever,”?celebrating Bryant’s milestones each year. And fans love it.
