Alex Rodriguez is a name that cannot be separated from the face of MLB. Such are his accomplishments, controversies, and bonds with peers. One might think his stories are contained only within the sphere of Major League Baseball. But the shared friendship between him and NBA legend Kobe Bryant is a different novel altogether.

Stepping back from Alex’s biogenesis scandal back in the day, if one zooms in on his friendship with sportsperson, one would uncover a treasure trove of stories. Having started their careers concurrently, Alex and Kobe have helped each other grow with exchanges of sage advice. This particular time, A-Rod recalls that LA Lakers’ star helped him achieve his dream.

The 3X AL MVP and 10 Silver Slugger Award winner, reached the pinnacle of his career as he won the 2009 World Series. In a 2019 conversation with Kobe Bryant and Big Cat, they revealed the lesser-known knee situation that both players shared.

Alex opened up saying, “Lot of people don’t know. I am grateful because my knees were banged up and you[Kobe] said, ‘Alex, you got to see my guy in Germany…’ Literally, you sent me there and my knees have not been hurt. We won a championship and [I] probably played the last 5 years pain-free.

Had Kobe not recommended Germany’s Dr. Peter Wellington, his (then) knee doctor, former Yankees star, Rodriguez wouldn’t have been pain-free for years. Both hailing from a physically straining sport, the recommendation was effective for A-Rod which ultimately led to him winning the World Series. That comes from a place of discipline since Kobe never compromised on his fitness routine. With such a stringent practice, one might wonder how Kobe managed family time.

As a trailing thought to A-Rod’s little snippet, Kobe Bryant went on to share his routine and how he dealt with being fit and balancing his family.

Apart from bearing the tile of a legendary NBA player, he honed the title of a doting father. As an early riser, he would wind up his workout before 6:30 a.m. to wake his kids, get them ready for school, and drop them off. But with traffic increasing down south, Bryant inevitably spent more time in traffic. Subsequently, he missed his kids’ important days in school which was not acceptable. So he came up with a unique solution.

The only way he could not compromise on his fitness routine and family time was to take the helicopter. He said, “ I looked into helicopters and be able to get down and back in 15 minutes”. The extent to which Kobe would go to make things work for him and his family has been commendable.
