The New York Yankees are all set to secure a bedazzling lineup for their 2024 season. They already have the money it’ll take to lock down the best available prospects. Now, they just must put it where they can make their money’s worth. With Steinbrenner’s recent announcement of actively pursuing trade-ins and free agents this offseason, it is just a matter of time to see which sluggers they settle on. Incidentally, an MLB insider has some interesting candidates in mind for that.

The Pinstripes have reportedly signed all 18 of their minor league draft picks this year; it is pretty evident that they are looking at the bigger picture while putting their pieces on the board. While discussing the “teams to bounce back in 2024”, an MLB insider sees two of the most wanted major league players in the Yankees.

In a recent video posted by the Talkin’ Yanks on Twitter (rebranded as X), Jon Heyman, MLB Insider, and NY Post columnist, reflected on the most promising free agency prospects of the market right now. He picked up on two players, hinting that adding them to the roster might just help them gain back their former glory. Adding the prospects to the team’s preexisting lineup will supposedly make it “better than an ’82-’80 team,” were Jon’s exact words.

The pieces that are deemed to fit the Yankees puzzle perfectly are none other than Juan Soto and Cody Bellinger. The Padres outfielder is already amidst trade rumors, despite his agent’s claim that the team is not willing to let go of him anytime soon. Meanwhile, Bellinger has opted for free agency this season after declining the Cubs’ extension offer. Both of them have their own set of conditions going on that make them two of the easiest targets for the Yanks, other than their stats, of course.

Juan Soto bagged an impressive 5.5 WAR with 35 homers and 109 RBIs with a .930 OPS across 162 games this season. Given his $33 million projected payroll predicament with the Padres, it is no secret that the team will be biting off more than they can chew if they keep him on the team with all the financial setbacks they’ve been going through. The Yankees can trade him in for cash favors, along with some of their minors’ prospects.

Cody Bellinger, on the contrary, has nothing to hold him back, giving the Yankees a clean slate to start with—a slate that scored .881 OPS with 26 homers, 97 RBIs and a 4.4 WAR in 130 games played this season.
