The famed owner of the New York Yankees has been carrying the helm of the team from behind the scenes for almost 16 years now. Although his father, George Steinbrenner, AKA ‘The Boss’, was instrumental to the Yankees’ fame and game in the 20 century, he left the responsibility in the hands of his two sons in 2007, as his health began to worsen. Now, only Hal Steinbrenner is left to rule one of the biggest empires in sports history.

He is famous as the Yankees owner, more specifically because he was sired by George, and infamous for his rulings over the club. But there is more to him than his Yankees legacy that often goes overlooked under the magnanimity of his father’s shadow.

Harold Zieg Steinbrenner, AKA Hal Steinbrenner, is the introverted younger son of George Michael Steinbrenner, the Third, and Elizabeth Joan Steinbrenner (née Zieg). He had an older brother, Hank Steinbrenner, who passed away in 2020. Hal also has two sisters, Jessica and Jennifer Steinbrenner. Wallace Matthews of ESPN fame describes Hal as “smart, vulnerable, funny, at times profane and always immensely likable. And ultimately, perhaps unknowable.”

Hal is known to have a self-deprecating sense of humor, and he doesn’t like following in his father’s footsteps just because he knows that it would be an impossible feat to achieve. “I never walked into this with the concept of trying to act like George,”, Hal revealed to Matthews, “trying to be everything that George was, ’cause I can’t. Nobody can.” That’s what Hal thinks of the Boss.

As of 2023, Hal Steinbrenner has a personal net worth of $1.3 billion, according to Forbes. His earnings don’t just include Yankees turnover; he has investments in fields other than baseball. Although Hal is the chief managing general partner of the Yankees, dealing with the diamond with his feet on the ground was never a part of his dream. He wanted to fly instead.

Hal Steinbrenner’s pilot dream and connection with the army

Hal Steinbrenner owns a GTO single-engine and a Cessna High Wing plane. He likes to fly them for fun, although they’re also used for business purposes. Hal learned to fly while studying at Williams College in 1991 for a degree in Bachelor of Arts. According to the billionaire owner, flying acts as a way to help him escape the pressure of being a Steinbrenner. He doesn’t own a jet but does want to fly one someday.

Hal has always kept himself immersed in science, psychology, and math. An avid aviation and space geek, one of his best memories of his father was when George arranged a trip for him to Cape Canaveral to pamper his son’s fascination for flight. He was 10 years old at the time. Hal once told the NY Daily News tabloid, “I always wanted to be a pilot. I loved talking to pilots, learned a lot from them even before I started flying.”

Before studying at Williams, he studied at the Culver Military Academy. Although he did not follow in his father’s footsteps by joining the Air Force or being in service, he didn’t stay completely out of touch with his army background. Hal often hosts meet-and-greets between the members of the Yankees and the members of the U.S. Military Academy. He can even be found citing army and aviation terminology during his interviews and conversations with his players.

Hal Steinbrenner’s sporting investments beyond baseball

As a part of the Steinbrenner family, Hal has investments in many sports fields other than baseball. He supports the fields of horse racing, automobile racing, and real estate.

Is he part of the same Steinbrenner family that dominates New York City sporting circles?

Yes, Hal is a part of the same famous Steinbrenner family that dominates New York City sporting circles. Other than the New York Yankees, the family is involved in Steinbrenner Hotel Properties, Kinsman Farms, Harding Steinbrenner Racing, and various Broadway shows and philanthropic foundations.
