The Steel City’s getting rusty, and their QB situation is corroding just as fast—if Mike Tomlin doesn’t step in with a fix, this whole thing might start falling apart. The Steelers have been grinding through some rough seasons, and let’s be real—their quarterback carousel isn’t making things any better. Kenny Pickett was supposed to be the guy but nah, that experiment didn’t scream franchise QB. And now, they’re stuck in the Wilson vs. Fields debate.

But we just can’t overlook the other concerns with this QB drama, can we? I mean, this roster has gaps that need patching if they want to win Lombardi in 2025. With that being said, Tomlin and Co. need a lot of work to do. Luckily, the team’s entering the 2025 offseason with something they didn’t have in a while—money. Lots of it. And now, Over The Cap projects that the Steelers will have about $60.2M in cap space.

Let that sink in for a moment. The way their QB position has played in the past few seasons, let’s hope the Steel City doesn’t end up paying every penny to a new QB. Sure, the quarterback is the primary thing that the team’s looking to resolve, but let’s not forget they’ve other players to tackle who are hitting free agency in 2025. And who are they:

Key free agents for the Steelers:

  • QB Russell Wilson
    QB Justin Fields
    RB Najee Harris
    RB Jaylen Warren
    WR Mike Williams
    LT Dan Moore Jr.
    RG James Daniels

Starting with the big picture, because, of course, their QB dilemma is probably the most talked about thing than the Chiefs failing to clinch a 3-peat. First things first, Russell Wilson’s surely looking for a massive contract after his one-year deal with the team was over. But are the Steelers ready to take a chance on him? I guess not. See, the reason’s pretty simple.

The Pittsburgh team has failed to find the true heir to Ben Roethlisberger ever since his retirement. And now? They’re probably not gonna offer someone millions who has just one or a couple of seasons left. BUT! They do have Justin Fields, right? Besides, he’s much younger and athletic than Russell Wilson. And most importantly, he’s not gonna cost a fortune to the team—unless they’re looking for other options.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Russell Wilson the answer for the Steelers, or should they invest in Justin Fields' potential?

Have an interesting take?

But what about their running backs? Najee Harris has had an insane performance ever since the Steelers drafted him back in the 2021 NFL draft. Geez, the guy recorded over 1,000 yards for every season he played. But it’s the money game we’re talking about. Harris’ contract worth $13M is now over and he must be eyeing a lucrative deal.

On the flip side, signing Jaylen Warren can be a cheaper option considering the RB will enter his fourth season after his $2.5M contract is now over. Sure, Harris is the better option here if we look at this performance-wise, but the odds are that Mike Tomlin may prefer Warren over Harris.

And then there’s Mike Williams—probably on his way out after a season he’d rather wipe from existence. On top of that, the Steelers can take a sigh of relief if they want to bring back the right guard, James Daniels. The reason? Well, his final season with the team ended in week 4 due to a torn Achilles.

As for the OT, Dan Moore Jr? Well, you can just say, his contract can raise some questions. Sure, he’s aiming for a big payday, but with his struggles in pass protection, that paycheck might not be as hefty as he’s hoping.

All in all, it’s safe to say that with $60.2M in cap space in 2025, Mike Tomlin has to take care of the whole roster, including their quarterback dilemma.

Is Russell Wilson going to a struggling team?

Russell Wilson’s last season with the Steelers needs a deep dive—going from winning like a gladiator to crashing like a paper plane in a storm. His track record? Started 11 games and recorded 214-of-336 passes for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a 95.6 passer rating. But nope, no one’s gonna talk about his stats when he lost the last five games of the season and was knocked out in the wild-card round.

And now, his future with the Steelers is hanging by a thread—or worse, it might already be snapped. With that being said, the veteran QB is probably looking for a new team to start the 2025 season. According to an article by Ben Rolfe of Pro Football & Sports Network, Wilson can end up with the Tennessee Titans.

UFF! A journey from a champion team to a struggling one that recently recorded 3-14 in 2024 and hasn’t had a winning season for the last four seasons. That surely wasn’t in Rusell Wilson’s 2025 NFL bucket. “Wilson would bring some stability to the quarterback room and is not a quarterback who will upset the fanbase every week with bad throws,” Rolfe wrote. “Wilson will likely be looking for something more permanent, so this might be a deal that takes a while to develop, but this move could make sense for both sides in 2025.”

Here’s the deal: the Titans hold the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL draft. With Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders available in the draft, the Titans are probably gonna draft one of them. Meaning? If the Titans sign Wilson for the 2025 season, he may not be a starting QB but a mentor either to Ward or Sanders.

On top of that, if they want to go ahead with Wilson, the deal may not be a cheap one. According to Sportrac. Russell Wilson is predicted to sign a two-year $77 million deal. Let’s see what the offseason brings to the table for Wilson.
