While many soccer fans across the world consider Lionel Messi to be the greatest, Boca Junior fans don’t feel the same. The Argentine, for a long time, has been regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. However, for many fans, there has always been one blemish on Messi’s otherwise spotless record: the World Cup.

But last year, all of that changed, when he led the Argentine national team to World Cup glory in Qatar. It was a long-awaited moment for Messi and his fans, who had been waiting for years to see him lift the trophy. With this feat for many fans, Messi finally settled the argument about whether he was the best of all time. But not everyone agrees.

Recently, Messi traveled to his home country to play in some exhibition matches. This included a farewell match to honor Maxi Rodriguez against Newell Old Boys. Then on Sunday, he played in an exhibition match against Boca Juniors, in a farewell match to honor the legendary player, Román Riquelme.

Messi certainly added to the excitement of the match as around 60,000 fans filled the Alberto José Armando Stadium. However, during the match, an unexpected song was dedicated to their World Cup hero. With Messi performing on the pitch, all Boca Juniors fans in unison started deafening chants singing, “Messi, Messi, Messi, you have to forgive me, in La Boca the greatest, the greatest is Román”.

This snub might appear to have surprised fans around the world. But the reality is simple. Messi, who has excelled in Europe and for the Argentine national team, has not spent any time playing for Boca Juniors. Therefore, it is understandable why Boca fans name Riquelme as their greatest legend who gave the club so many years.

Riquelme has a special place in Boca Juniors fans’ hearts, having spent almost thirteen seasons there. During this time he helped the team win 3x Copa Libertadores and 5x Argentine Primera División. Though it is true that Messi’s achievements and records speak volumes of his unmatched talent. But it must be remembered that for fans of a particular club, it is their own legends who hold special places in their hearts.
