<strong>History</strong>

The Formula One World Championship first started back in 1950. The very first F1 champion was Italy's Guiseppe Farina who raced for Alfa Romeo.

The sport has had 33 different champions in its history and a few of them are multiple championship winners. Currently, the driver with the most championships is <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/tag/michael-schumacher/">Michael Schumacher</a> with 7 under his belt. However, <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/category/f1/mercedes">Mercedes</a> driver <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/tag/lewis-hamilton/">Lewis Hamilton</a> will be eager to overhaul that. Hamilton currently holds 6 World Championships and stands on the cusp of equalling Michael Schumacher's record at the end of the season.

Hamilton and Mercedes are the defending Champions with the pair's dominance unlikely to end anytime soon.

For a long time, Bernie Ecclestone was the F1 supremo, having founded the Formula One Group. He spent 40 years as chief executive of the company after gaining control of the commercial rights.

But in 2017, he stepped down and ownership was handed to Liberty Media who have been taking care of F1 since then. To herald their control, they even changed the F1 logo.

Chase Carey was the first F1 CEO in the 'liberty era' of F1 and will be stepping down at the end of the year. Former Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali will succeed the American in 2021.

The Danish driver was one of the few who nearly had his career ruined by a poor car. Case in point, the problematic <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/category/f1/mclaren/">McLaren</a> of 2014. That season marked the beginning of McLaren's decline from grace.

To be fair to Magnussen, he and teammate Jenson Button did score podiums in the opening race. But since then, McLaren has never stepped onto the podium. The Danish driver finished 3rd in his very first Formula One race, for Mclaren. He ended the 2014 season in 11th, behind teammate <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenson_Button">Jenson Button</a> in 8th.

After being dropped in 2015, he returned to F1, with Renault this time. However, he only managed two point-scoring finishes in Russia and Singapore. Magnussen ended the season in a disappointing 16th place.

When he moved to Haas alongside Romain Grosjean, his fortunes were a little better, but not much. He ended up in the point in five races and an overall position of 14th.

2018 saw a much stronger Haas team emerge as a contender for the best midfield team. He had points finishes in 11 races and ended the season inside the top 10 in 9th.

Unfortunately, in the 2019 season, Haas F1 delivered one of their worst performances. The Dane finished in a lowly 16th, in a season plagued by on-track and off-track issues.

French F1 driver, Romain Grosjean has had two stints in Formula One.
