Another day, another McLaren story, this time the Woking squad have been linked to a potential deal with French manufacturer Renault. Although it seems unlikely due to the fact that Renault already supply 3 teams including the factory team, new evidence suggests that Toro Rosso have resumed talks with Honda for a potential deal.
If Toro Rosso seals the deal with Honda, it potentially frees up a slot for McLaren to disembark the Honda train. Further adding fuel to the fire, Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul, Alain Prost and Jerome Stoll were spotted leaving the the McLaren motorhome along with F1 sporting director. McLaren boss Zak Brown admitted that he had spoken to Renault but has affirmed that the situation is complicated.
“It can still go either way. It’s probably one of the biggest decisions McLaren have ever had to make.” He added: “The best thing for McLaren is to make the best sporting decision possible. We are here to win so we are going to make a sporting decision. We can’t afford not to be on the podium. It’s a big decision that has lots of elements to it and economics are one. But fortunately we have extremely committed shareholders which means we can make a sporting decision and deal with the economics.”
