Manchester United are desperate to close the gulf in class they had with Manchester City this season. The Red Devils are reportedly targeting Napoli left-back Faouzi Ghoulam as the first piece of the jigsaw puzzle.

Having finished a massive 19 points behind eternal rivals City, Mourinho and the United board are desperate to bridge the gap between the two clubs. As a first step, the Old Trafford-based outfit has reportedly made contact with Ghoulam’s agent, as per reports from French outlet Foot Mercato.

The 27-year old has been making headlines with his performances in the Serie A, with experts enlisting him as one of the best in his position in the world right now. The Algerian is a critical cog in Maurizio Sarri’s team and loves to bomb the wing and put in crosses and set up goals. However, his season was cut?short after suffering a ligament tear and then a fracture. He could make only 17 appearances but he still scored 2 goals and set up 5 more in those games.

The Algerian is currently valued at 38 million euros, his price will climb to 48 million if a bid is not made before 30th June. With Luke Shaw reportedly set to leave the club this summer, Ghoulam would be an excellent acquisition for Mourinho. Moreover, the former Saint Etienne man’s agent is Jorge Mendes, who also represents several other well-known footballers.

However, with Paris St. Germain also interested in the player, it will be interesting to see who has the last laugh. Keep watching this space for more.
