After a disappointing season, outgoing Premier League champions Manchester City are preparing for a major squad overhaul this summer with the biggest priority being, bringing in more home-grown players. According to reports, their prime target is Arsenal’s 23-year old midfielder Jack Wilshere.

City are believed to go ahead with this bid despite Arsène Wenger’s warning to back off. Wenger had earlier said that Arsenal were not in a position to sell their best players. If this deal does go through, which will around the region of £30 million, City will have spent £100 Million in buying Arsenal players alone in the last few years after the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor, Samir Nasri, Kolo Touré, Gaël Clichy and Bacary Sagna all choosing to leave the Gunners for men in sky blue.

Wilshere has been plagued by injuries all season and has been restricted to just a handful of appearances. He has had his fair share of critics over the last couple of years, saying that he hasn’t really improved since bursting into the scene as a teenager sensation.

Although Wilshere’s favored position is in central midfield, he has been deployed on the wings on a few occasions this year. With Francis Coquelin rising to an important member of the team and with Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla establishing their central positions this year, Wilshere will find it difficult to get back into the starting line-up.

Wilshere was expected by many to lead the Arsenal side for a long time to come. The fact that he was given the No. 10 jersey proved the same. But as a player who is at an age where he needs to be playing regularly, he might just consider a move away from the Emirates. With the European Championships coming up after next season, Wilshere’s England chances will also be boosted with regular gametime.
