Former F1 driver Gerhard Berger is of the opinion that Lewis Hamilton is in the league among Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. The former McLaren driver puts the Brit right between the two all-time Formula 1 greats. Berger thinks “Lewis and Senna are two best” drivers he has seen.

Lewis Hamilton, as we all know, is the seven-times world champion. After losing out the eighth world title narrowly to Max Verstappen last year, Hamilton lost the chance to be the man with the number of world titles in the history of F1. However, Lewis is back for the 2022 season to try and break Michael Schumacher’s record once again.

Talking about the Mercedes maestro, Berger stated, “But at the end of the day, for me, after these 45 years I’ve been around here, Lewis and Senna are the two best I have seen.”

“But I still put Senna as number one. Because the charm of Senna and the personality of Senna were another level. But on the sporting side, I think Lewis is as good as Senna was.”

Can Lewis Hamilton become the best in F1 this season?

The narrow loss to Max Verstappen of Red Bull in Abu Dhabi last year still haunts the Mercedes star. The controversial last-lap showdown in UAE prevented the former McLaren man from claiming his ultimate glory. Despite the setback, Hamilton is back to fight for the championship.

However, the start of the season hasn’t been great for him. In Bahrain, Lewis qualified in P5 behind two Red Bulls and Ferrari. However, with a bit of luck, Hamilton picked up the podium as two Red Bull had to settle with DNFs in Bahrain.

The Jeddah Grand Prix has been the worst for the Briton in recent times. Hamilton was out in Q1 for the first time since 2017, as he qualified in P16. The race day didn’t bring him anything special as the 2020 champion finished in P10. All in all, Hamilton is in P5 in the driver’s standings with 16 points.

Interestingly, Hamilton is behind his new teammate George Russell, who is in P4. On the other hand, Hamilton’s dip in performance can’t entirely be blamed on him. It is believed that the Mercedes Power units are underperforming this year. Not only Mercedes cars but also McLaren, Williams, and Aston Martin are suffering because of this. As F1 moves to Australia this week, it’ll be interesting to see if Lewis Hamilton can have some redemption in round 3.
