The outbreak of coronavirus has already decimated the tennis calendar. The Laver Cup 2020 now becomes the latest victim of the COVID-19. The 3-day event has been canceled due to escalating health and safety issues arising from the global crisis.
The Laver Cup 2020 was scheduled to commence on 25th September at TD Garden in Boston. The fourth Laver Cup will now be held at the same venue from September 24-26, 2021. Earlier, the French Open 2020 was postponed from mid-May to mid-September, clashing with the Laver Cup 2020. This further prompted the organizers to cancel the event, preventing clash with a major tournament.

“We needed to take a decision now” – Laver Cup 2020
“We needed to make a decision now on our event,” Laver Cup Chairman and CEO of TEAM8 Tony Godsick said. “Also, we know our passionate fans will be disappointed that they have to wait an extra year for the Laver Cup in Boston. But this is the responsible course of action, necessitated by the emerging calendar conflicts.”
Godsick also explained that the organizers wanted to call it now to provide certainty for their fans as well as the players, sponsors, broadcasters, partners, staff, volunteers and of course the great city of Boston.

“Most importantly, all of our thoughts are with the massive number of people around the world impacted by COVID-19 and the incredible selfless people working on the front line keeping many of us safe,” he added.
“The Laver Cup is only at the start of a long and incredible journey which will continue next year,” Godsick concluded.

The Laver Cup took the right decision to cancel the event as there are greater priorities in the tennis calendar this year. Also, top players like Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer would have certainly picked French Open over the Laver Cup if the tour resumes till then. We are certainly disappointed with the suspension. However, the Team Europe vs Team World competition has taken the right step.
