Formula 1’s motorsport director Ross Brawn has revealed that he is targeting three new car manufacturers to help drive the sport’s expansion program. Brawn said “There are several premium manufacturers that I would like in Formula 1. Porsche is one of them, But also Aston Martin and Lamborghini”. The current situation is that the costs of developing an engine that is in conformity with the technical regulations discourage new entrants. However, Brawn hopes that proposals for new engine specifications from 2021 will reduce entry costs and attract new interest.
Brawn said “I guarantee you, with today’s power unit, no manufacturer is interested in getting started. That’s why we have to make it cheaper and easier. That’s why we need to create an environment that’s attractive to them. We have to look at cost control for the future. We want a meritocracy, we want the best to win – but we don’t want two or three seconds between the teams. For 2021 we will have great-looking cars which can race each other. We have an opportunity to start again with the engines, learn from the past and redefine what we want for the future.”
However Brawn insisted that V8, V10 or V12 engines are not an option. He said that the FIA and Liberty Media have to respect the investment the manufacturers have put into the V6 hybrid units. Unfortunately, Liberty’s engine proposals have not received any positive view from all existing teams. The Scuderia Ferrari team suggested that they might veto the plans. They even issued a threat to quit the sport outright. For one thing, it will be fun to see more major manufacturers flexing their technological muscles. Currently, Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Renault are the sole manufacturers and Alfa Romeo are expected to join next year. With the likes of Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Porsche, it will be a true manufacturer battle.
