Shelby Rogers had a 2-0 lead in the head to head against Naomi Osaka and had come into the match after defeating Petra Kvitova. In what was expected to be a tough match, Osaka looked in supreme form. The Japanese player wasn’t threatened by Rogers and took a comfortable straight-sets 6-3, 6-4 win.
Naomi Osaka on her being dubbed the ‘favorite’ for US Open 2020
In her post-match press conference, Osaka was asked about her semifinal opponent, Jennifer Brady. While Osaka is considered the favorite to win that match, she was having none of it. Osaka also talked highly about Brady.
“No, I don’t feel like the favorite weirdly enough. Because there’s no fans, I don’t feel anything. I just feel like I’m going into a match with a really talented player, which is all of my previous matches anyway.
“For me, I remember watching her. I watched her match against Putintseva earlier today. I know she’s a big threat.”
Osaka mentioned that since there are no spectators at the tournament, she doesn’t feel like a favorite. Osaka is one of the most popular players on Tour, and so fans would have roared for her if they were allowed in.
