Is Tom Kim's resilience enough to overcome his recent struggles on the PGA Tour?

There is not a day when dreams are not crushed in the golf industry. It started with Sam Burns’s Ryder Cup dream getting sacrificed as he had a poor 2024 season and has likely missed the chance to get selected by captain Keegan Bradley. And now it’s time for Tom Kim.

Kim just completed his 4th St. Jude Championship, and let’s just say the golfer is pretty bummed about it. In the recent after-round interview with the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Kim revealed how he is feeling after finishing at T51. When asked about his finish, Tom Kim said he was cruising along until a bogey on the 16th hole threw him off track. He said, A bogey on 16 cost me a lot. Then hit a good drive and then another really poor missed shot, just anywhere left is fine, and missed it right”. Talk about a bad day.

Reflecting on his 2024 season, the golfer said, “This season has just been — it’s just been like this. I’ve played really good golf, and then had some tough finishes. I feel like 2024 has really kicked me in the butt”. And well, it is kind of true. Kim has missed four cuts this year, with only one top-10 finish at the 2024 RBC Canadian Open. It all would’ve been fine, somewhat, if the golfer hadn’t missed the chance to get into the second competition in the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Tom Kim is projected to miss the BMW Championship because he’s currently ranked outside the top 50 in the St. Jude Championship’s leaderboard. The BMW Championship only includes the top 50 players, so Kim would need to move up in the rankings to qualify. But, unfortunately, bogey, double bogey, double bogey in his last three holes at the FedEx St. Jude Championship do not vouch for it.

When asked if he’ll play more in the fall, Kim said, “I don’t know. It’s been a long road.” He’s been playing non-stop for nine weeks, including a final group appearance and a playoff, plus the Olympics. He’s mentally exhausted and doesn’t feel sharp enough to keep going. “I’ve been through a lot. 51, 52, 50, it’s not going to matter. I’m just looking forward to getting some rest and getting ready for next  year,” said the golfer as he rested the case. What was it that you found most memorable about Kim’s St. Jude performance? We think we might have a guess.

Have an interesting take?

Golfer Tom Kim faced sudden backlash from fans and critics after a shocking display of anger on the 12th hole at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. In a video posted by Tron Carter, Kim is seen slamming his putter on the green in frustration, leaving a dent, and walking away without repairing the damage. Fans didn’t expect this from Kim, and a majority of them started voting for the golfer to get disqualified.

Fans said phrases like, “How the hell isn’t this a DQ, TC?” and “Should be kicked off the tour for this! Disgusting behavior from a professional!”. But why did he do it? Well, the outburst occurred after Kim missed a short putt and had to settle for a par instead of a birdie. His anger seemed to get the best of him, and we all know how that went: three bad holes one after another: bogey, double bogey, and double bogey. Now that the golfer is likely to miss the chance to get a spot in the BMW Championship and has announced the alleged end of his 2024 season, do you think he had any good games this year?
