Formula 1 isn’t a sport that is exactly famed for its devotion to conserving the environment. Yes, sure, the introduction of the V6 hybrid cars was a step in the right direction, in terms of reducing the carbon footprint. But Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel thinks that there is a lot more that can be done.

Speaking on Thursday’s driver press conference ahead of the race in Monza, Vettel said, “I think the sport has some big challenges ahead. There’s some big questions to be answered for the future, to make sure that this sport is still around in years to come.

“With where the world is going, there are big things that we need to tackle and Formula 1 is maybe not at the forefront at this. I think what I wanted to say is that we can do better than what we are currently doing.

“Looking after the world, the environment, I think there’s some interesting aspects that we are trying to fulfill, to achieve.”

According to Vettel, if F1 doesn’t adapt to the demands of the changing world and doesn’t do its bit for the protection of the environment, things could get difficult in the future.

Sebastian Vettel suggests what aspects F1 and its drivers can look to amend

The 4-time World Champion opines that as the pinnacle of motorsports, F1 needs to lead from the charge against environmental degradation. Instead of reacting to external pressures and amending the sport, F1 needs to set a precedent.

“Formula 1 should be setting examples rather than reacting to pressure from the outside”

Vettel believes that the starting point to a greener F1 should be focusing on the issues off the track instead of on it. Vettel said, “I do think every little bit makes a difference.

“The amount of plastic bottles we consume during the weekend, I think there’s solutions to that. How we power, maybe some panels in the paddock, there’s solutions to that.”

For Vettel, F1 can’t just opt for the cheapest of options compromising the environment in the bargain. Even in terms of cars, Vettel thinks that the sport could do more to make it eco-friendly.

It’s good to see drivers concerned by the impact of the sport on external matters. Usually, being environmentally conscious isn’t something we attribute to motorsport drivers. In addition, it’s great to see someone other than Hamilton address these affairs.
