Football is in my blood,” said Kole Mathis, the promising recruit for the Colorado Buffaloes. This young talent has come of age to possibly become the star linebacker of the Colorado Buffaloes, emulating his father, Kevin Mathis, who once was a star in the NFL.

But more goes into the story of Kole Mathis than just football. His family also contributed largely to making him a better player and person. On an immense scale, the performance of the player is predicated on the support that they receive, and for Kole, it finally sums down to his father, Kevin, and his mother, Kim Mathis.

Kevin Mathis has been in football for quite a long time. Starting from his time at Gainesville High School, he played multiple sports like football, basketball, and track throughout high school. His talent got him into Texas A&M University-Commerce on scholarship, where he trained before going into the NFL as an undrafted free agent to the Dallas Cowboys in 1997. Kevin spent some time with the Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, and Atlanta Falcons before retiring in 2006 due to a neck injury. Moving into his head coaching spot, Kevin took all of that experience from Prime Prep Academy and later to Colorado with Deion Sanders at Jackson State University.

Kole’s mother, who mentored him, also has an exciting story herself: Kim Mathis. Kim is a native of Dallas, Texas, and an industrious student; she graduated from Skyline High School and later acquired a BBA from Texas A&M University-Commerce. She also worked for Electronic Data Systems, EDS, and as an Assistant Marketing Director for the COMDEX Convention that used to be held in Las Vegas. Kim is an author and an entrepreneur; famously known for her memoir. The book is a documentary about her life struggles and successes named “Dope Girl: A Story of Addiction”. One can see her hustling and struggle as a reasonable basis for how her family has accommodated itself.

As identified by Kole, “When I was fifteen, everything revolved around football—from middle school days to practice during summers to whatever I could watch on TV.” The aspiration, for his part, and the persistence, because of the family’s support, most precisely that of Kevin, was all very vital in life. This, too, we can get from Kole’s game statistics.

Kole Mathis is one of the young talents that the Colorado Buffaloes are eyeing to get for the team. He was proficient athletically, dating back to his high school days. He played high school football at Fairview High School in Boulder. A wide receiver and cornerback by position, he played in 11 games as a senior in 2021, compiling 31 tackles, four interceptions, and many pass break-ups. These achievements imply that he can make large-scale changes at the college level.

Though statistics of a recruit alone do not speak volumes about the work effort of a young player, Kole’s attitude he rigorously upholds for the game is masterful: “I’ve always believed in putting in the hard work and staying focused,” Kole said from a MaxPreps interview. “My dad has always pushed me to be the best I can be, and my mom’s support keeps me steady.” The blend of the professional tutor from the father, Kevin Mathis, and the emotional support from the mom, Kim Mathis, has brought Kole this far.
