Watch Dogs: Legion is the latest Ubisoft AAA title which kicked-off the next generation of gaming. So far the game has received fairly positive reviews and has managed to do well on the sales charts. A private military organization, Albion, has besieged London and players have the freedom to recruit most of the NPCs in the world to fight against the organization, which is what makes this game unique. Although, ironically, the game’s source code has reportedly been hacked and leaked online.
As reported first by IGN, a ransomware group called Egregor leaked data of Ubisoft and Crytek. ZDNet broke the news as they suggest that this data was posted on the group’s dark web portal.
“For the Ubisoft leak, the Egregor group shared files to suggest they were in possession of source code from one of the company’s Watch Dogs games. On its web portal, the group touted they were in possession of the source code for the Watch Dogs: Legion game, scheduled to be released later this month.

“It was, however, impossible to verify that these files came from the new game, rather than an existing release.”

Watch Dogs Legion is a game that is based on hacking your way to completing the objectives
For a game that is predominantly about hacking, this is definitely the biggest irony of the year. Although, this could spell trouble for Ubisoft considering the magnitude of the leak. Most of these ransomware gangs extort companies to pay them hefty sums for their own data. If the companies fail to comply, they just leak everything online, making the data available for everyone. Clearly, no company would want this to happen and will obviously try to avoid it. ZDNet also contacted Egregor for a statement.

The group replied, “In case Ubisoft will not contact us we will begin posting the source code of upcoming Watch Dogs and their engine.”
This is definitely worrisome for Ubisoft, as they absolutely cannot risk it any further. Although, Ubisoft and Crytek both are yet to respond to Egregor. This could also mean that their operations are not affected by the group. The year 2020 just keeps on getting weirder by the day as wait for further developments on this matter.
