Who can forget the infamous IPL spot-fixing case, involving the three Rajasthan Royals’ players Shantakumaran Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila. In the recent development, a trial court in Delhi has adjourned the hearing on framing of charges on the alleged betting and spot-fixing activities of the three players, who were charge-sheeted during the IPL 2013 corruption scandal. The schedule for the next hearing is on 25th July.
It has been two years since the Rajasthan trio had been arrested, but still the charges have not been framed on technical grounds against any of the cricketers. The reason quoted by the additional sessions judge, Neena Bansal Krishna was that the order sheet has not been prepared yet, thus leading to the adjournment of the hearing and the framing of charges. All the three cricketers were arrested in May 2013 by the Delhi Police for indulging in spot-fixing.
Sreesanth and Chavan had been banned by the BCCI in September 2013, whereas Chandila’s case is still pending before the disciplinary committee of the BCCI. These three cricketers were among many of those who were arrested for allegedly indulging in the betting and spot-fixing during the Indian Premier League in May-June 2013. Over the time, both Sreesanth and Chavan were able to get bail on 10th June whereas Chandila had to spend three months in prison before he got bail.
Last month, Judge Neena Bansal Krishna had asked the lawyers of the accused persons to furnish their arguments before 6th of June. The hearing on Monday was based on the submissions by the representatives of some of the 39 accused in the fixing case. Hopefully, the next hearing will see some more truth coming to light.
