Virat Kohli on Saturday surpassed former India captain MS Dhoni in another record in Test cricket with India’s convincing win against Bangladesh at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. India won by an innings and 130 runs on the third day of the first Test and with this victory, India have maintained their winning streak at home as well.
This was India’s tenth innings win under the captaincy of Virat Kohli — the most under any Indian captain. Earlier it was MS Dhoni who had a record of nine innings victory. Mohammad Azharuddin placed at third on the list with eight wins, followed by Sourav Ganguly with seven. Rahul Dravid, Kapil Dev, and Polly Umrigar have all won two matches by an innings while leading the side in the longest format of the game.
Three out of those nine wins took place in India’s last three Tests at home – by an innings and 137 runs in Pune against South Africa and by an innings and 202 runs in Ranchi against the same opponent only while the final win came against Bangladesh in Indore. Earlier India achieved this feat of a hat-trick of innings victories – in 1992/93 season and in 1993/94 season as well.
The victory also showed India’s dominance over other teams as well as their record of six consecutive Test match wins since their win in Antigua Test against West Indies — this is, however, the joint-most for India in succession in the format. India achieved this unique feat earlier under the captaincy of MS Dhoni in 2013 when they registered four wins against Australia and two against West Indies.
Virat Kohli has also equalled the record of Allan Border of 32 Test wins as the captain. But the difference is Virat Kohli took only 52 matches to reach the feat whereas Border took 93 Tests to do so. Kohli is now at the fifth in the all-time list. With this win, India have extended their lead at the top of the ICC World Test Championship with 300 points.
