Fans Reignite Rivalry
Looking at the Instagram post, we see that the war of words started when a Serena fan commented about Sharapova’s group chat. For those who don’t know what this is about, a while back Maria organized a group chat with all of her fans and posted clips of the chat on Twitter.
The comment was aimed at the fact that Serena did not have to organize a group chat herself. Maria Sharapova laughed at this and wrote, “I see what you did there”. She did not take it seriously but one of her fans did and called Serena ‘mediocre’.
No one in their right mind would ever call Serena ‘mediocre’. This is why there were more comments from fans supporting Serena Williams. Even though Sharapova has retired, it turns out that she has still not escaped her rivalry with Serena.

The Maria Sharapova-Serena Williams Rivalry
Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams have met 22 times in their careers. Serena was so dominant in their head-to-head that the rivalry turned out rather one-sided. She won 20 of the 22 meetings leaving Maria with only 2 wins. After the 2004 Wimbledon, I am sure nobody would have expected this.

Serena was already a major figure on the WTA Tour in 2004 while Maria was just starting out. At the 2004 Wimbledon, a 17-year old Maria Sharapova thrashed Serena 6-1 6-4 to win her first Grand Slam. After this win, many thought they would have a competitive rivalry but sadly that did not happen.
The actual sad news is not that we did not see a competitive rivalry. The sad news is that we will never see the two of them play against each other again. This is because Sharapova retired in 2020 and it looks like Serena will also do it soon as she is going to be 39 this year.
