“I Am Stuck In The Seventh Place” – Alexander Zverev

2019 was not a very great year for Alexander Zverev. After claiming the title at the ATP World Tour finals in 2018, big things were expected out of him.

Many said that 2019 will finally be the year when he gets his hands on a grand slam title. However, it could not have been further from the truth. He ended the year with only one title at Geneva, which was an ATP 250 event.

However, this would have meant that 2020 was a year where he could have gained a lot. This was because he had literally nothing to defend. Sascha recently opened up on how this was made tough by the pandemic.

What did Alexander Zverev say?

Zverev said that the pandemic was getting tough for him now. After an abysmal 2019 season, 2020 was finally the year where he could have gained a lot in terms of ranking points and hence improve his current number 7 ranking.

Many agree that Zverev is a lot better than his current ranking indicates. In fact, in terms of potential, many rate him as the best player outside the Big 3. However, he needs a similar amount of luck to go along.

“The situation is tough for me because I played very badly in 2019 for a long time and I have hardly any points to defend this year. Now I could collect a lot, but I can’t and I am stuck in seventh place.”

To be honest, Zverev started his year at the wrong note. He had a very tough time at the ATP Cup where he lost all three of his encounters to Alex De Minaur, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Denis Shapovalov. However, he had an unexpected turn of fortunes at the Australian Open.

He made it to the semi-finals of the tournaments by shocking all his critics. We might go on to say that he was looking like a better player than higher-ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev.
