Can anyone dethrone Mater Dei, or are they destined to remain the kings of high school football?

The 2024 high school football season has been nothing short of electrifying, and with the postseason around the corner, teams are preparing for the final showdowns of their season. These five powerhouse teams have made their mark and won’t go down easily. From Texas to California, each of these programs has put in work, blowing their opponents with double-digit leads; there are so many talented athletes these high schools have on their teams.

These schools are filled with multiple 5-star recruits holding multiple offers from the CFB powerhouses. As of today, here’s a breakdown of the top five teams you need to keep an eye on as they go to make history.

No. 5: North Crowley Panthers (Texas) (10–0)

North Crowley Panthers have been on fire this season, finishing their regular season undefeated at 10-0. They’ve put the entire state of Texas on notice with their high-powered touchdown-obsessed offense and stout defense.

They are 6-0 in the district. Ranked No.5 in the Texas. The Panthers offense, led by QB Chris Jimerson (sr) and star wide receiver Quentin Gibson (sr), already has 10 touchdowns to his name this season. North Crowley Panthers have proven they can go toe-to-toe with any team in Texas. Their well-rounded squad and insane run game, complete with an explosive offense and tight defense, make them a real contender for a deep playoff run. They’re in it to win it, and they’re not afraid to take on anyone who stands in their way.

No. 4: Milton Eagles (Georgia) (10–0)

Milton enters the postseason as one of the hottest teams in the country, finishing a perfect 10- the regular season. This Georgia squad is firing on all cylinders. This offense is led by senior 6’6 quarterback Luke Nickel, who has been exceptional, putting up eye-popping numbers week after week. Their defense, meanwhile, has been just as strong, ensuring that this team is as dangerous on that side of the ball as they are on offense. They are the No.1 ranked team in the entire state of Georgia.

Milton Eagles’ balance is what makes them such a tough opponent. They’re able to score quickly with players like RB TJ Lester (sr), who already has 18 total touchdowns this season, and also lock down opposing offenses when necessary. With a roster full of depth and versatility, they’re not just aiming for the playoffs; they’re eyeing a state title and maybe even a national one.

No. 3: Bishop Gorman Gaels (Las Vegas) (9–1)

With a record of 9-1, Bishop Gorman is still one of the most dominant high school football programs in the country. They’re feared by opponents and have been building their dynasty for years. The Gaels quarterback Maika Eugenio who’s been lighting up the field all season long. Their defense is tough as nails, allowing very little to slip by.

This team knows how to win, and they’re built for a championship run. Their only loss is against Mater Dei, which is very understandable. Bishop Gorman has the experience and talent to make a deep playoff push. With a well-rounded team that excels in both offense and defense, they’re primed to make a statement as the postseason progresses. Don’t be in awe if they end up on top when everything is said and done.

No. 2: Duncanville Panthers (Texas) (9–0)

Duncanville has been cruising through their season with a perfect 9-0 record, looking every bit the Texas powerhouse they’re known to be. Five-star Alabama commit Keelon Russell has been nothing short of dominant. He threw for 208 yards and four touchdowns in a commanding 48-6 win over Cedar Hill. Their defense has been just as impressive, shutting down opposing offenses at every turn.

With Russell leading the way and a defense that’s nearly impossible to break, Duncanville is destined for a serious run in the Texas playoffs. Their well-balanced attack makes them one of the most complete teams in the country. They’re a serious national title contender, and don’t be surprised if they finish the season as one of the top teams in the nation.

No. 1: Mater Dei Monarchs (Santa Ana, California) (9–0)

Mater Dei holds the top spot as the best high school football team in the country. Staying undefeated at 9-0 and showing everyone why they’re the gold standard. For Mater Dei, there’s no such thing as competition. They are the bullies of high school football. The Monarchs have an embarrassment of riches, with college-bound talent scattered all over the field. Their dominance is unmatched. And their depth means that no one can afford to take them lightly. Their 49-0 drubbing of Sierra Canyon earlier this season showed just how good they are.

Mater Dei has everything: talent, coaching, and a roster full of future stars. As the playoffs approach, they’re hungry for another national title, with one of the most loaded teams in high school football history. The Monarchs are the team to beat—and they’re not backing down from anyone.
