Is requiring parents at games a smart move, or just a band-aid on a bigger issue?

Southwind High has found itself in a weird spot. A month back, there was utter chaos in Southwind because of some very serious threats that were posted online regarding the school. A 15-year-old boy made direct threats of “shooting up” the school through his Instagram account and several phone calls. This sent the entire county into a frenzy and Southwind High, alongside several other county schools, had to enter a “soft lockdown.”

The issues did not stop there. A month after the incident and eventual arrest of the 15-year-old boy, Southwind witnessed several fights during their Friday game against Overton High. Action had to be taken to put a stop to the ongoing problems and frequent endangerment of students’ and staff’s lives. KWAM News Radio 990 AM Memphis took to X to share an update on what Principal John Bush had decided regarding attendance for football and basketball home games. “No parent. No entrance. That’s the new rule for students attending football games at Southwind High School,” KWAM mentioned in their caption.

This is a step in the right direction and people from the high school football world agreed. More so because increasingly dangerous actions are happening around Southwind. The entire “threat” scenario and the fight breakouts during the games aren’t the only problems the school has to deal with.

While most of the perpetrators for those problems were the students, the next incident which happened on October 17th was initiated by a parent. A few students got into a serious fight outside Southwind, and parents had to intervene. Something that should’ve been an easy wrap escalated when the mother of one student, Jasmine Colbert, pulled out a gun and threatened some people.

As per reports from the sheriff’s office, Colbert had allegedly said, “I’ll blow your (expletive) off.” The entire incident happened around Crock Pot 2, which has become a popular hot spot for Southwind students to grab a bite and relax. The HFB community on X has been singing praises regarding Bush’s decision on the attendance requirement.

“Perfect idea,” was what one person X was quick to point out. Following this, another person also shared the same sentiment. “Excellent idea,” they wrote. This decision would not only allow Southwind to curb student-led fights on the premises, but will also allow the parents to have better supervision of their children.

Finally, 2 more people on X also agreed with the change. “It’s a start!” was what one of them said and “Great idea. About time,” was what the 2nd person mentioned. The entire “fighting” problem has been prevalent in college football as well. A few days back, we saw how there was an entire brawl on the sideline during the South Florida vs UAB game. Southwind, taking this decision now would have a much bigger ripple effect on the future of the school and its students.
