During his time at Dalton Catamounts’, Bill uplifted the lives of many young players by motivating them to do things that were ethical for their wellbeing. Late former sports writer Furman Bisher was the one who highlighted this unique quality of Chappell, saying, “Coaches like Bill Chappell have kept more kids out of jail, off the street, and shown them the right track (more) than any public official ever did.” His good work left a long-lasting impact on the culture of the school.

Even Chuck Harris, who graduated from Dalton High in 1972, also mentioned the same thing about coach Bill Chappell. He not only supported the underprivileged students to lead a normal life but also helped them to grow in the future by aiding them with college scholarships. “Coach Chappell’s influence is seen in the hundreds, maybe thousands, of players he has coached. He helped us graduate; he kept some of us out of jail and even helped some of us get out of jail.”

Bill was not just a coach but a reformer who worked back and forth to uplift his students. Now those sentiments will forever echo in the hearts of Georgia. May his soul rest in peace.
