High school and college football reality is not a fairytale but a battlefield where the shoulders come out in helmets and conquer the field. But in some rare cases, they come out in a wheelchair, letting the passion for a sport win over their physical restraints. Carson Kimball, a Bremen High School senior, falls into the second reality that set an emotive tone on Friday by arriving on the team’s ‘senior night’. The player who received a heavy tear on his body, leading to lower body numbness, seemed quite elated at his first gridiron appearance since August.
”As soon as I saw the Bremen exit sign, I teared up. It was emotional going back through the place I’ve driven through so many times,” the senior high school player noted. The journey back to the mix involved surgery and a long treatment procedure at Grady Memorial Hospital. While injuries in this sport are common, it was an intense rival match-up against Bowdon High School that left him paralyzed when he got tackled brutally. The QB succumbed to a spinal cord injury. BHS Principal Tim Huff said, ‘‘It wasn’t like something malicious was done. It wasn’t like he just had this awful lick, you know, he’s just a good kid that was just playing football, a game he loves.”
