Nasir Wyatt's bold words: Confidence or arrogance? How will he fare in the Big 10?

The Mater Dei Monarchs (11-0) rag-dolled the Centennial Huskies (9-3) in the 2024 Southern Section Football Championship game on Friday, November 22, with a fearsome 36-7 victory. While the scoreboard told one story, Nasir Wyatt’s post-game Instagram comments told another. The 6’3, 225-pound pure lean muscle Oregon commit and elite linebacker lit up social media.

Nasir Wyatt took it to the IG, with the cold-blood caption after clinching a playoff victory: “Dey free’d dem huskies, just foe dey a*s to die soon as dey left up out dat kennel..🤦🏿‍♂️#bta.” Big mouth? Maybe. But Nasir’s game backs it up. With 16 solo tackles, 7.5 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles this season, Wyatt is an absolute menace on the field. His aggressive style and violent playmaking capabilities make him one of the top pass rushers, not just in the state of California but also across the nation.

The Santa Ana Star chose the No.1 ranked college program, the Oregon Ducks, over heavyweights like Tennessee, Steve Sarkisian’s Texas, and USC, and he’s already issuing warnings: “Big 10 quarterbacks do yall homework before I get to Eugene.” Such a diabolical statement from a young kid. The Big 10 ain’t anything like high school. However, with his proven defensive track record and big-dawg mindset, it’s safe to say the young man’s gonna thrive in the Big 10 under head coach Dan Lanning, who’s known for turning high school players into top draft pick caliber.

Mater Dei Monarchs vs. Centennial Huskies

First QuarterMater Dei kicked things off with a 29-yard field goal from Dominic Zante, giving them a 3-0 lead with 5:49 minutes left on the clock. Both teams struggled to find their rhythm and tempo early in the game, but the Monarchs had it under control. And the Monarchs struck first in the second quarter of the game, from a 1-yard punch in a touchdown for Dash Beierly, keeping up the lead to 9-0, but unfortunately butchered the extra point. Centennial did not let this one slide. They fire back quickly with a 52-yard—old-fashioned breakaway run by Dean Gibson. Later, Gibson ran for a 16-yard touchdown, keeping the game tight and making the show run 9-7.

Mater Dei didn’t like that at all. They brought their war face into the game and took control of the field. Beierly connected with tight end Mark Bowman for a five-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 15-7 with 39 seconds on the clock before halftime, but failed the two-point conversion. Then Centennials fumbled the ball at the crucial minute of the game and gave it away. Dash Beierly took a hit and went down on the 3-yard line. The Monarchs’ sophomore QB, Furian Inferrera, clocked in, and boom—a touchdown. Mater Dei leaped 22-7 before heading into the locker room.

Then the sophomore QB comfortably made the completion, and Mater Dei scored two touchdowns in the 3rd quarter of the game, making the game 36-7. And in the last quarter, the Huskies fumbled twice, and an interception sealed their fate. The Monarchs coasted to victory, leaving Centennial to lick their wounds.

With this win, Mater Dei has a potential rematch against St. John Bosco on the horizon. For Nasir Wyatt, it’s another chance to showcase why he’s considered one of the best in business. And for the Oregon Ducks, it’s clear they’ve landed a future star ready to wreak havoc in the Big 10. As for Centennials? They learned the hard way: don’t poke the bear (Monarchs).
