It’s not every day you get to witness a young athlete celebrate not one, but TWO back-to-back state championships. But that’s exactly what Tomuhini Topui, Mater Dei’s star defensive tackle, did after his Monarchs (12-0) topped the De La Salle Spartans (12-0) in the California CIF State Open Division Championship on Saturday night at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo. The final score? 35-17. And while Tomuhini Topui was dominating on the field, his proud mom, Yola, was right there joyfully cheering him from the sideline, watching her son become the Trinity League MVP. He had 5 tackles against the Spartans.
On December 15th, Yola celebrated her son’s victory on Instagram, posting “My boy is a back-to-back state CHAMPION!!” She congratulated Mater Dei and even gave a playful shout-out to De La Salle, saying, “Great game, yall! It wasn’t a lay down like the team we played last year from the bay.” Ouch! But the fun didn’t stop there. Yola shared an adorable Boomerang on her Instagram Story of her sons, Tomuhini holding his baby brother Tomasi, with the caption, “My boys and the scoreboard lol 37-15 baby great game de la!!” It’s clear she was overjoyed by her son’s incredible feat.

Now, for those who don’t know, Topui’s ain’t just your average player. Standing at 6’3″ and weighing 290 pounds, he is a big threat on the field—both literally and figuratively. The kid’s ain’t just strong; he’s a monster with a verified 79-inch wingspan, technique, and balance that makes him a nightmare for any offensive guard in the country.
Even as a sophomore, he’s already committed to Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks. The Monarchs’ perfect season (13-0) wasn’t just a coincidence; it’s the result of a powerhouse program with depth. They’ve got 29 players with Division I offers, and Topui’s one of the big names making it happen on both sides of the field. This victory marked a monumental accomplishment for the Monarchs, but the question now is: where does that leave Coach Raul Lara and the future of this powerhouse program?
Mater Dei Monarchs vs. De La Salle Spartans
Aight, let’s talk about the game, though. Going into this showdown, Mater Dei was already the favorite, and they proved why from the jump. With 29 players flexing Division I offers, it’s clear-cut the talent on this team is low-key stacked to its core. But Boy, De La Salle wasn’t just going to roll over; the Spartans have their own squad full of future stars, and this game had a championship-level vibe from the get-go. But, as expected, the Monarchs came out swinging like a pimp.
Quarterback Dash Beierly was in full control of the tempo, completing 18 of 27 passes for a season-high 355 yards 3 touchdowns, and zero picks. You want a show-off? Look no further than Washington commit and offensive menace, Marcus Harris, who caught 6 passes for 92 yards. Oregon-bound Jordon Davison was running through Spartans’ defenses like they owe him some money, rushing 17 times for 107 yards. And that first-quarter aggression? Not gonna lie, straight fire.
The Monarchs were playing with demon energy, smacking the Spartans around like it was nothing. Beierly found Harris for a 25-yard gain, then Davison capped off the drive with a 3-yard run. A couple of quick plays later, Beierly hit Gavin Honore for a 90-yard touchdown, doubling their lead like it was a walk in the park. That’s there. Actually sealed the game.
But hold up—De La Salle wasn’t about to go down without a dogfight. They clawed back in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 23-15 with some strong offensive play. Fa’avae took matters into his own hands, rushing for a 41-yard touchdown. And adding a two-point conversion to make it a game again. But as you’d expect from the Monarchs, they weren’t about to let that slide like that.
They responded with a 92-yard, 16-play drive capped by a 15-yard touchdown run by Davison to put them up 30-15. Beierly later added a 31-yard touchdown pass to tight end Mark Bowman to seal the deal, pushing the score to 37-15. At that point, De La Salle’s hopes were shattered, with a pick from Alabama-commit linebacker Abduall Sanders and defensive back Ace Leutele locking up the championship for good.
The Monarchs may have won the back-to-back state championship, but they’re just getting started. The talent is real, and the dynasty potential is through the roof. As for Tomuhini Topui? Keep an eye on him. He’s just getting started, and if he continues on this path, his future is looking nothing short of spectacular.
