This was totally unexpected because Mikaela Shiffrin was the defending champion at the giant slalom. Shiffrin was the Gold Medal prospect for this event, and it was shocking to see her disqualified.
Shiffrin out after first round
Mikaela Shiffrin was the defending champion for giant slalom at the Winter Olympics. A highly possible gold prospect, she is known for her technique and skill.
Mikaela is one of those athletes who constantly make efforts to better themselves, even when they are at the top. She is known for her technical skiing skills, where there are hardly any errors on her part. She also watches videos of her own performances to see what she can do better.
Albeit, on Sunday, Shiffrin was highly disappointed after she got disqualified in the very first round of the giant slalom event. She started off well, but only lasted 5 turns before she lost control. This caused her to get disqualified from the giant slalom event.
She received a “did not finish” and got disqualified as a result. She won’t be able to compete in the giant slalom event again. This has previously happened with her back in January 2018.
"I'm sorry that that was the performance I did today but that also happens."

Shiffrin was severely disappointed and told her fans that she was sorry for this.
“I’m sorry that that was the performance I did today but that also happens, “ said Shiffrin. This was a huge disappointment for Shiffrin herself, as well as Team USA.
But she revealed that she was going to “reset” and focus on the upcoming slalom event. The slalom events are Mikaela’s area of expertise and she is expected to perform her best.
No dwelling on disappointments
Even though she was heavily disappointed, Shiffrin has said that she won’t be dwelling on that. Rightly so, Shiffrin has more events coming up and she will need to focus on those.
The athlete is not yet defeated and will forward to regaining her champion status at the upcoming slalom event.
“Just gonna rest and focus on what I can control,” said Mikaela.
