A wrestling era has come to an end with The Undertaker retiring. The news had saddened many across the globe. The Phenom’s last match with AJ Styles was certainly one of the best-written matches in WWE history. The final chapter of the documentary revealed how the idea for the match came about.
AJ Styles pitched the idea
Like many others, Styles too desired to face Taker in the grandest stage of them all. In one of Steve Austin’s podcasts, Taker mentioned that he would like to retire on his own terms. This closure is something that he had always waited for.

“It’s not so much that I feel like I have anything left to prove to the business or give to the business. It’s a personal challenge for me”, Undertaker said during Steve Austin’s podcast.
Styles saw this as an opportunity. He felt like Taker wanted some more matches at WrestleMania. He wanted to figure out a way to convince the Phenom and he finally made up his mind.
“I was like I’m gonna give it a shot. If taker doesn’t want to do it, it’s not gonna happen. So I called Undertaker and we just started chatting”, Styles revealed.
Undertaker initially turned down the match
Undertaker had an idea about why Styles called. While talking to Taker, Styles asked whether he wanted to do something with him. Taker initially turned down the idea because he was not feeling up for it.
Undertaker said, “Bro, honestly I’d have loved to work with you 10-15 years ago. We could have torn the place down. I don’t have any aspiration to get back in the ring”
Styles asked Taker to take the time to think about it. Undertaker gradually changed his mind and made an appearance at WWE Super ShowDown earlier this year defeating Styles to win the Tuwaiq trophy.
The feud would actually begin when Styles taunted Taker in one of his matches. Things escalated and eventually led up to their Boneyard match at WrestleMania. Undertaker won the bout by burying Styles.

The Phenom bids farewell
Fans were speculating a re-match between Styles and Undertaker down the road. However, Taker has decided to hang up his boots. He feels he has nothing left to prove. We are unsure if Styles knew that it was going to be Taker’s last match; judging by his tweet, the chances are unlikely.
Still floored by the experience and reaction to the #BoneyardMatch at #WrestleMania.
If it was the last time @undertaker laced up his boots, I’m honored it was against me. #TheLastRide https://t.co/qzofoKEn2Q— AJStyles.Org (@AJStylesOrg) June 21, 2020
