Boris Becker Responds

Tennis legend Boris Becker was one of the people who participated in a demonstration against racism and police violence in London. He received numerous comments criticizing him for doing something like this from his own country. In a recent tweet, he responded to these comments and said,

I am shaken, shocked, frightened by the many insults coming only from Germany for my support for the Black Lives Matter demonstration in London yesterday (Saturday)! Why, why, why? Have we become a country of racists?”

He went on to talk about how his support was seen positively by other people but not by his own country  as he said,

“Fortunately, my support for the Black Lives Matter demonstration was considered very positive, on CNN and in the Daily Mail but, many people in Germany still did not understand that this is my family history.”

When Boris Becker talks about family history, he is referring to his ex-wives. His first wife Barbara was the daughter of an African American and his second wife Lily’s mother was from Suriname.

While the German Legend took part in the demonstrations in London which were largely peaceful, he has not commented on the movements in the United States. Along with peaceful protests in the United States, there have been many riots that have resulted in property damage.

Many athletes like John Isner and Rafael Nadal opposed such a form of protest. And many would like to hear what Boris has to say about this and he will probably say something soon.
