The Xbox Showcase 2023 was a treat for all eSports lovers. With so much happening in the industry in the ongoing historic year for the community, the titles announced in the showcase add to the thrill. The makers announced the next part of Sea Of Thieves: The Legend Of Monkey Island in the most unexpected crossover. 

Sea Of Thieves was released in March 2018. In the multiplayer game, players use a pirate ship to first-person explore an open environment. The announcement of its crossover with the popular title Monkey Island made the fans super excited. But a recent tweet by Ron Gilbert, the creator of Monkey Island claimed he wasn’t informed of the crossover with Sea Of Thieves.

The fans were in high spirits reacting to the first look of Sea Of Thieves crossing over with one of the greatest adventure games of all time. The first look indeed looked quite promising. But the fans are now disheartened following the statement of Ron Gilbert. A fan reacting to the teaser reveal of Sea Of Thieves wrote on Mastodon, “ I’m genuinely intrigued about this one. Is Ron Gilbert involved with it? As a youngster, I’d have burst at the thought of an Ultimate/Rare+ RG crossover!” 

Answering this, the creator wrote back saying, “ Nope. Wasn’t even told about it. Happened behind my back.” As the creator of Monkey Island himself confirmed his zero involvement in the upcoming project, fans were let down. Sea Of Thieves’ new venture is expected to be one of the finest experiences in the adventure genre. Thus, the involvement of a creator like Ron Gilbert really did matter to the fans.

Although Gilbert is acknowledged as the series’ inventor, Lucasfilm, and Disney are technically the rightful proprietors of the Monkey Island name and are not required to get Gilbert’s permission. Despite the disappointing lack of communication from Disney, the Return to Monkey Island developer, Terrible Toybox, according to a report has said  that “Disney did give him a heads-up on the project as a courtesy, but the game was well into development at that point and he wasn’t given the opportunity to be meaningfully involved.

According to the creator’s team, he wishes the makers well, as he looks forward to the project. for The new chapter to the franchise of Sea Of Thieves begins on July 20. The title will be issued in three monthly installments.
